I have a contract with vodafone but want to buy a dongle to use my laptop when away in the campervan but I donot wanta monthly contract as I will not use it very much. Is it possible to buy a dongle that is used on pay as you go with any company. I have a pay as you go mobile for vodafone.

Yeah, all the operators do it (or at least they used to) but be prepared to pay through your nose, £50 for the modem too.

You said you had both a contract and pay as you go with Voda, which is it ?

That sounds ok but if I do not use it for a month as I do not go away in the camper would it still be active or do I have to pay £2 per day irrespective.

You would have to read the small print!

But even if you do have to use it straight away, you have an effective free dongle, then just top up when you leave for your break. :)

Borrowed an O2 one(£39) put £15 on it, 3GB lasts a month. Went from Worcester down the Seven up the Avon to Birmingham on a Canal boat.
Access was a non event until we approached Birmingham, from then on it was fine all the way back down to Worcester. Was never as quick as my home 6meg +/- broadband though but tolerable once you got accustomed to it.
I am off to try it in a tent in Salcombe in July. (The Dongle)

i had one of these recently, Tmobile, £30 for the donlge plus £10 mandatory topup. used it down in somerset about 4 times, shit reception (due to the area and building) but worked. i think they all require you to use once every few months to remain activated, but as they use normal SIMs you can just pop it in a phone make a text to keep it active.

Having moved flat recently I was worried about the time it would take to transfer my home broadband so invested in an O2 pre-pay dongle.

I have to say the thing has surpassed my every expectation.

£15 top up gets you a month's use (to a max of 3gb of data) and I've been making full use of it since I bought it. I can take it with my laptop on the train and find it does a splendid job whilst at home it reaches very decent speeds (it claims to have hit 7.1mbps) and is easily good enough to stream videos on the likes of iPlayer (as I frequently do).

You pay for the dongle itself and top up as and when required, no ties.

Personally I can't speak highly enough of O2's service in this instance.

Correct answer. BG if you're not already signed up to Quidco, you should be!
