Can anyone tell me why it takes over a week to activate broadband? I ordered mine on the 11th and it will not be up and running till the 18th. What do they have to do that take a week?

I dunno.. but it's worth the wait, patience is a virtue, mind.

I know it is worth the wait had it at my last address. The problem I have at the moment is that when I built my PC's I had broadband so did not need a internal modem, because I had a external ADSL modem / router.

This means that I have no internet access untill I get my broadband activated.

It could be that the exchange you have moved to is up to capacity. When I last moved I had to wait just over 3 weeks for a slot to become available.

Back to dial-up for 3 weeks was a killer.

Worth testing the broadband connection before the activation date as sometimes BT get it done a few days before the written date.

I did that and was told I'd be activated 2 days after I moved. Then got a call on the day to say it wasn't possible, then another a couple of days after explaining why. I was not happy. Having been on broadband for 18 months switching to dial-up even for a day is a nightmare.

That should not be an issue for me. I have moved in to the Town Centre and my friend as a 2meg service from the same exchange I will be using.

The only obvious reason for the wait I can think of is that there are so many people moving to broadband that the engineers are very busy.. you are probably in a queue and will just have to wait.

I am in the process of switching from one provider to another, and I am promised that there will only be a 2 hour down time

Which to which, and why?

The 'activation' process takes a few seconds - someone telnets into a router bank and types in your line code. But if all the router banks are full, they have to go install a new one.

You're damn lucky BT are that fast, it took Eircom EIGHT MONTHS to install my line because I was queued about 300 and they only installed a ten port router each time they added one...

That's what i thought. Just someone at a computer pressing a few buttons. I think they just say 5 days incase they have to go and add a new router.
