whats the input of the state in monetary terms?
do the Germans generally consider this to be worthwhile.

To add to HT's response: there's a big difference in productivity between the UK and Germany. There are a multitude of reasons for this, but I suspect that one of the factors is that pretty much everyone turns up for work on time, people have a seat and not been rammed under someone's armpit and they don't need to spend the first 40 minutes of the day describing how they were held up by signal problems at Bad *******heim

In other words, there's an acceptance in Germany that a thriving economy needs efficient public transport (and congestion-free roads): the UK government doesn't hold that view
