Bristol Rovers have sacked manager Paul Trollope following their exit from the Johnstone's Paint Trophy on Tuesday night to Exeter City on penalties.

Statement from Bristol Rovers:

Paul Trollope has today been relieved of his duties with Bristol Rovers Football Club.

Following a meeting between the manager and chairman it has been decided that Paul will leave his position at the club with immediate effect and be placed on gardening leave.

The club will announce later today who will be temporary charge for this week's game against Colchester United, while the search for a permanent replacement is undertaken.

Rovers Chairman Nick Higgs said: "We would all like to thank Paul for everything he has done for the club over the last five years. He presided over a very successful period for us, and became one of only five managers in the history of the club to secure promotion with Bristol Rovers.

"However, we have become concerned with results and performances this season and the recent slide down the table. We now find ourselves in the bottom four, with attendances dropping off rapidly, and the board felt that immediate action was needed to make the necessary changes and try and reclaim something from this season.

"We now hope to make a prompt appointment to take over the managerial role and get the club moving back in the right direction.

"Again we would like to thank Paul for all his hard work, and wish him every success in the future."

The club will now be inviting applications for the position and there will be no further comment at this time.

After moving to Bristol Rovers in 2004 as a player, Paul Trollope was appointed caretaker manager of the club in September 2005 after Ian Atkins was relieved of his duties.

Two months later the club appointed Lennie Lawrence as Director of Football, and Paul took on the role of First Team Coach on a permanent basis.

Paul enjoyed success in his first full season at the helm of Bristol Rovers, when he guided the side to the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final before going on to achieve Play Off success at Wembley.

In September 2009 Trollope signed a new 12-month rolling contract and took on the title of manager rather than first team coach.

Ridiculous decision. Hope Trollope gets a good pay off.

On NSC for over two decades...
I thought he was supposed to be one of those highly rated up and coming managers? I know Rovers are in the bottom four, but just a draw would be enough for them not to be!!

He got a draw against the teams lying in 1st and 2nd place away from home on consecutive weekends not long ago. Why would that earn you the sack??

I don't understand the bit about him being placed on 'gardening leave'. Shirley if he's been sacked, he isn't on any kind of leave at all?

I believe it is a way of removing him from the job without having to pay a lump sum redundancy package. Though, I remember reading that it also means if they don't fire him they can't employ a new "manager", so I guess the new guy will have a different job title, unless they're waiting to see if they have to pay compensation for stealing someone else's manager.

That as they are continuing to pay him he cannot go and work for anyone else whilst on gardening leave?? I guess he must have agreed to this? As far as I am aware they would be free to pursue whoever they want to take over in these circumstances.

I guess he could just take a "f*** you" attitude and go and get another job whilst suing for compensation, but I doubt they'd be paying him and he wouldn't be on gardening leave

He's one of my neighbours and is a genuinely nice guy. Sorry to hear this. Hmmm - the Swindon job would be handy for him if it were to come up....

Is Tunnicliffe still there?

Seems an age since we heard anything of him. He was supposed to be good once wasn't he?
