Brisbane? Not much going on in Brisbane but plenty to do North of Brissy.

What type of holiday are you after? Beach, swimming, shopping, island hopping?

Start in Brisbane for 2 days, get over the lag.
Head up to Fraser Island for 3 days.
Stopover in Agnes Water / 1770 for 2 nights and dive the reef.
Up to Airlie Beach for the Whitsundays for 3 days.
Long drive up to Cairns. Good nightlife.
Short drive up to Port Douglas, awesome place. Big 'effing bats.
Short drive again up to Cape Tribulation, paradise.

Fly down to Sydney or Melbourne and spend some time down there.

You forgot to include 3 or 4 days on the beach on the Gold Coast.
We stayed at Conrad Jupiters. Highly recommended

Didn't forget it, that's all South of Brisbane so I didn't mention it.

I did forget Noosa, however!

Head to Noosa straight from Brisbane before Rainbow Beach/Fraser Island.

Also, if you like your Rum, stop off in Bundaberg before Agnes Water/1770 and take the tour of Bundaberg Rum.
Feel free to pop into Mal's Farm in Bundy and tell them Tom the Pom says Hi.

BrisVegas is BRILLIANT. MUST visit the casino (ex-govt tax gathering centre, now free to get in and spend not too much money on quite a fun night out). Brisbane is river-based, has one sort of really speedy water-based catamaran-type thing that you have to pay a nominal sum for . Tho as a tourist in no great rush to get anywhere, you'll be wanting the free bathtub-type boat. If you're planning on going slightly further afield, PLEASE consider visiting Byron Bay. OK, its swamped by tourists in much the same way Brighton is. Don't make it any less worth visiting tho eh? The beaches and the general vibe are

Some good advice so far, but I would say August is probably the worst time to go as it'll be mid-winter. Still decent weather but not a good time. I would suggest spring and autumn are the best times to go as their summer gets very hot.

Fraser Island is great, Whitsunday Islands are better (IMO), go down the coast to Sydney... the East Coast of Australia is nothing short of amazing

Another one for Hervey Bay/Fraser Island,
Went to Brizzie in August 97,supposed to be their winter but still got sunburn, don't forget to pay homage to the Gabba whilst you're there.
Sydney is great,we stayed on the north shore,Bunderberg in Queensland worth a visit,as is surfers.
Enjoy the xxxx

Palm Cove, north of Cairns, if you like it quiet and idyllic. Take the train (beginning with K?, can't remember rest) up the mountain in the rain forest and cable car back. Shat meself but the views were stunning!

All good advice IMHO. I'd throw in Green Island rather than Fraser Island though. Brisbane is the gateway to Queensland and as such all the fun is north of it. Gold Coast and Surfers are worth a drop in. My favourite place in the whole world is Cairns ..... LOVED it there. I could easily live there.

Brisbane has a very short winter and by late Aug / early Sept warming up, climatically close to perfect.

As for Brisbane, its one big country town. A better quality of life than Sydney but to visit maybe just a bit dull. That said there's plenty of good stuff within a couple of hours...

Interesting, I'm still 50/50 on Cairns.
What did you like about it?

I loved the laid back attitude - walk into the bank and their wearing t-shirts, shorts and flip flops. Yet they're very direct as well - much like all Australians. Love the climate - especially the rainforest. Made me laugh the signposts warning that you car could get washed away from a car park if you were still there at hightide. Great women in the night clubs.

Nothing I can really put my finger on and say THAT. That said, it was nearly 25 years ago so if I went back it might well be different and so would my personal outlook. Best two weeks of the year I spent in Oz.

Don't discount northern NSW, Byron and the hinterland is a lovely part of the world and only about 2 hours from Bris

Good shout. I'll throw in Paradise Beach in NSW and, going against popular opinion, I enjoyed Canberra ( although strictly speaking it's not actually in NSW ).
