Memories ?
The fighting in the North stand but I`ll leave that story to Freddie Goodwin for next week. Strange to think Bournemouth and Boscombe used to be our biggest rivals along with Luton in those days.

Right now Bournemouth are effectively our biggest rivals.

Also fighting in the goal mouth when haywards heath lads were making thier way along the bottom of the north stand to hook up with some brighton lads and the bournemouth piled down onto them:ohmy:

Brighton. NOT KEMPTOWN!
I can certainly remember the away fixture that season.
It was a rare all ticket game, and we sold out and could have sold a lot more.
I believe there were 20,000 packed inside the tight Dean Court ground, and our contingent of about 5,000 were housed in the open "Brighton Beach" end.
(This attendance could well still be Bournemouth's ever biggest attendance? I wait to be corrected).
It was a 1-1 draw, and I think it was the Ted McDougal era.
He was the Scott McGleish of that time.
I can't remember much about the game itself, but what I clearly can recall was a man suddenly appearing on the wall at the back of the terracing, shouting, "It's Broiton, not Brighton".
Someone grabbed hold of one of his legs, and pulled him in to the Albion fans.
It was like dropping a goldfish in to a tank of pirranahs.
Everyone wanted a piece!
The police moved in, and eventually got to rescue the poor victim who was carried out as a black and blue mangled wreck.
I wonder if he remembers this match with the same fond memories?
And of course, at the end of the season, we finished runners up to be promoted up to the old second division.
Who remembers the last match that season - home to Rochdale?
Now that was a night!

I was living in Bournemouth at the time and remember the game.Don't think Dean Court could have squeezed 20,000 in though!
Bournemouth had Ted Macdougal and Phil Boyer as a superb strike force and John Bond was their rather gobby manager.Happy days, got well pissed after the match and was satisfied with a draw.
Yup,I remember the game against Rochdale.Drove over from Bournemouth in my trusty Austin A40!33,000 gate with 3000 locked out ,I believe.John Templeman scored a screamer and surprise surprise, the game ended 1-1,with us needing a point for promotion and Rochdale a point for survival!:lolol::thumbsup:

Feels similar to the 71/72 season when brighton and bournemouth up the top of the old div 3 shame we cant get over 30,000 in at withdean, any memories from that year guys?

remember it well mate, Argus had photos of Lee F from Haywards Heath in a white coat scrawled with Albion graffiti being frisked by the police, recall the HH contingent wading in..was some game.

Went to the Rochdale away game, and on way home across London Deano nearly came to blows with a Brighton player, as three or four of them were on the train. I think it may have been Willie Irvine...not sure now

Just looked up the attendance in "Seagulls. The Story of BHA FC".
Crowd, 22,540.
Their record crowd: "Against Manchester United in the cup in 1957 who won 2-1 in front of a record crowd of 28,799 at Dean Court".

I remember the game at Dean Court.
2 of us travelled down and after a few beers we got into a scuffle before the game when my mate decided to start singing GOSBTS or something to a passing bunch of Boscombe supporters. I watched the game through an eye that was rapidly closing and had to get a bag of frozen peas to ease the journey home.
The only time I ever failed to avoid a scrap. I'm sure we didn't have "firms" then or if we did I would have run a mile. I just wanted to watch the footy, enjoy the train ride and read the programme and the match report in "the pink", roughly in that order.

Kit scored off his knee as we beat Bournemouth at home.

I knew we were going to draw the last game v Rochdale because, after 2 consecutive defeats, Pat Saward changed the team and for the last 12 unbeaten games our results sequence was WWDWWDWWDWWD - I can remember that without looking it up, how sad!

It was great to finish above the more fancied Bournemouth and Notts County, just a shame we couldn't quite match Villa.

If I remember correctly, a lot of the Bournemouth coaches were parked at the Greyhound Stadium and had their windows smashed after the home game.
Bournemouth fans got their revenge at the away match, chased us back to the railway station and rained stones onto us while we waited on the platform
