Great stats and sums up what I see. I wouldn’t have had a clue about the figures but our style of play tells me that we’re not as bad as many think we are.
Our higher than most set play conceded goals is because we give away far too many cheap free kicks and penalties. Against Newport on Sunday it felt like we gave away a free kick every time we conceded possession. Because of this we are giving our opponents a higher percentage opportunity for them to score. Turn it the other way around and our delivery in set piece situations is poor in comparison. We do have players that would score more from corners etc if the delivery was better.
Our scoring rates per attack must be a pretty low on average? Our final ball into the box is infuriating most of the time. We get into great positions and then either breakdown by heading into a cul de sac, or by not getting past the first defender with a cross. We don’t seem to get long shots on target which in turn means we don’t get the lucky deflected goals that many other sides seem to get.
I also feel that our strikers are a bit lightweight, and at the moment seem to be running through treacle.
These are just my opinions and not meant as a criticism to GP. I am firmly behind what we are trying to achieve. It’s just that something isn’t quite right with the balance of the team. If we don’t address the above issues then I do feel we could get relegated this season. How big a disaster that would be for the clubs long term view I don’t know, but I don’t think changing the manager is the answer.
