'Bringing European football to Brighton was massive'

Danny Welbeck:

"The lads gave 100%, it's difficult obviously with the first leg. Very difficult to take that defeat. We paid the price with the first leg. We knew we could get a result in front of the fans tonight but it was too much to do."

"We've got a lot of very good players that are out [injured] as well. With the squad, we have to be proud of ourselves and we did the best that we can do."

On his goal:

Nice to get the goal. Last week I got some good headers and the keeper made some good saves. It was nice to get that goal but tonight it's not enough."

On getting back into Europe:

"We want to keep improving and progressing as a team and as a club. There's a great culture at the club."

"We're going to do our best to get back to playing in these competitions."

"Brighton [being in the Europa League] is historical, first time in Europe, bringing European football to Brighton was massive in itself but there are some steps we need to take to keep bring European football to Brighton."

Very surprisingly, I'm personally not too dissappinted. If you step back and look at players age 23 and under that have made an impression so far, we have good times ahead.

Verbruggen - 21
Van Hecke - 23
Lamptey - 23
Barco - 18
Jack - 18
Gilmour - 22
Baleba - 20
Encisco - 20
Facu - 19
Evan - 19
Adingra - 22
Pedro - 22

I know we have others, but the potential shown from those above when they've played shows we are we'll placed. And they have model pros such as Pascal as a mentor.
Looking above and comparing that to our past does make you wake up.

Fati contributes very little.
That long shot got us out of our seats, I suppose - although I don’t think it was going in. Apart from that though, he was utter toilet. The time when he had a chance to swing in a cross in from left when under no pressure and spooned it out for a GK was reminiscent of the 97/98 team.

Great post.

Personally, like a lot of people, I wanted the team to play with pride and effort. They did that!!

Dissapointing across the two legs. Can't fault anyone tonight, they were always going to be up against it and they tried. Proud of them, though i do think in the post mortem questions will be asked of de Zerbi. The subs and timing seemed to kill any momentum we had built in the 2nd half and we never recovered it.

A learning experience for the team, one whose lessons i hope they will be able to apply in next seasons Eiuropean competition.

After the away leg all I wanted tonight was for us to play well enough that the fans applauded the team off the pitch 👊
Agree. I thoroughly enjoyed tonight. The lads gave everything, the crowd showed that we can create an atmosphere when we fancy it and the result was in doubt for the first 70 mins or so. I'm so proud of our efforts in Europe. Hopefully we can do it again some time.
