I know historically The Albion have drawn quite a few 30,000+ crowds but can anyone tell me the last time we go a 20,000+ crowd for a home game?

Also, does anyone rememeber how our capacity was reduced to round 12,000 and when? I can only ever remember the East stand being empty which obviously brought the capacity right down but were there any other times the capacity was lowered?

Thanks.

Haven't got a full set of Rothmans (can't afford them except every few years - and they're Sky Sports now, of course) - but according to one that I do have, in 1995 / 96 our capacity was down to 16,000 (from 32,000 when we left the top flight in '83); not that we came anywhere near filling it that season!

Do you mean March 7th 1992? If so, you're still wrong cos we were away.

Last one I can find is Jan 30 1988 when we lost 2-1 to Arsenal in the FA Cup (26,467)

Everest is correct. Don't forget the 34k that went to Wembley in 1991 though. Anyway, doesn't prove anything. We've been homeless for so long in a period where football has undertaken a massive revolution that no one can say for sure what our crowds will be like.

We're building a new club from scratch in many ways. Lets hope it's not the same marketing team as present come 2011/12!

Throughout the 'glory years', spending on ground maintenance was a very low prority (throughtout the league) and most grounds were basic as regards to facilities.

Then 'elf & safety was invented and had a dramatic effect, especially in Wales where ninnian Park had it's capacity reduced from near 40,000 to about 4,000.

Albion's East terrace, a vast open terrace on the Goldstone Lane. was apparently crumbling and varios sections were closed as there was no money to repair. Allied to that, new limits were made to other areas. In the past you would just let people in until you could physically get no more. It was great being a lad on a packed terrace where the crowd would sway and your feet may not touch the ground and when you scored you could be sent tumbling yards down the terrace. just watch some old footie clips of the kop and such!

yes that was fun for some but patently unsafe for many. The reduced capacities meant that, even in a capacity crowd, you could still have your 'own space'.

A further reduction came from turning standing into seated areas. At the Goldston this happened with full seating in the south end.

A final, small but significant, reduction came with a 'safety zone' set up by Bellotti An area each side of the players tunnel on the West Stand was fenced off. That area grew in the final season. safety? Well that area was infront of the directors box and bellotti risked a lynching everygame.

Like most of his ideas, that area didn't work either.

something in the region of 19,800 when we beat Bristol Rovers 2-1 to get promoted back to old div 2 in 88?? same year as we got 26,000 at home to Arsenal in FA cup. Cant remember last 20,000 plus crowd before then.

There was a lot of interest in our crowds for those last few games and the announced attendance always caused incredulous laughter.

When we were in Div 1 (now Prem) we didnt get 1 crowd of over 30,000 also I believe that the crowd for the Div III south winning game against Watford was our biggest. The records say it was over Christmas against Fulham. But that game against Watford the ground was full and they lifted us kids over the wall and we were all sat on cinders track around the ground.
