Brighton and Hove Albion are the 'Swansea City of this season'

Really interesting article on the BBC this morning: BBC Sport - Don Cowie warns Cardiff City of stylish Brighton

Don Cowie believes Brighton and Hove Albion are the 'Swansea City of this season' as Cardiff City prepare to welcome the Championship new boys.

The stylish Swans earned universal acclaim last season as Brendan Rodgers' men achieved Premier League promotion.

And Cowie has warned that Brighton, who like Cardiff also boast a 100% start, are a formidable footballing side.

"They pass the ball very well, a bit like Swansea did in the Championship last season," said Cowie.

The Bluebirds will create history if they beat Brighton on Wednesday by claiming three opening league victories for the first time in their 91-year history.

Newly-promoted Brighton have also won their first two Championship games, beating Portsmouth and Doncaster Rovers.

Cowie is wary of the "winning mentality" of Gus Poyet's side, but the Seagulls have not won in Cardiff since 1984.

"They are very expansive and play the ball wide," said the 28-year-old midfielder.

"Their full-backs push on and they play really good football. I was taken aback by it.

"Both teams will go into the game full of confidence and with six points so something has to give.

"I thought they were a right good side, they won their league very comfortably and have taken that into this season."

Summer signing Cowie and new Cardiff boss Malky Mackay know Brighton's dangers well as they were both at Watford last season when Albion defeated the Hornets 1-0 in an FA Cup fifth-round clash.

Mackay added: "They have great momentum, have a new stadium and are very wealthy. It is a club that is certainly going places.

"They have hit the ground running this season and are able to invest in players.

"They've outbid teams for Craig Mackail-Smith so that makes it a tougher and more competitive league."

Cardiff followed their surprise opening-day win at West Ham United with a comfortable home victory against Bristol City but, as Cowie acknowledges, the season "is only two games old".

"It has been a great start," Cowie said. "But that is all it is. We'll take confidence and belief.

"Expectation has risen and that is something we need to manage but we'd rather be here than at the bottom."

------------------------------------------------------------------

Sounds like their scouts have done a good job and we're not being underestimated. Nice to be compared to Swansea again :)

Good stuff. I always thought Swansea are the team we should be trying to emulate.

Interesting. A couple of things.

I would say we didn't 'outbid' anyone for CMS. He chose Brighton, despite other clubs offering more for him.

Secondly, this is the first time I've read or heard of anyone from that Watford game (from Watford's viewpoint) acknowledge our style of play. Mackay's comments at the time were embarrassing.

The interesting thing I noted was that they have not won the opening three game ever. I seem to remember reading recently that we haven't done it since 1957, which leaves me thinking a draw i on the cards.

Not strictly true in saying we've not won in cardiff since 1984 - we won at the Mill Stad I seem to recall :D

Really? I'd genuinely rather not get promoted than that.

not long ago, to even mention the words 'Brighton' and 'premier league' in the same sentence was nothing short of absurd- are you telling me you would rather not see us in the top flight because we would most probably struggle. thats like saying you wouldnt want us to get promoted this year because chances are next season we would go straight back down

I'm agreeing with pasty here. For me, it's precisely that.

What's the point of being really wanting to be in the top flight - or any division for that matter - knowing you're going to struggle? I'd like to see us consolidate, get stronger and be in a better position to make a good go of it when we're ready.

It really doesn't sound like much of a compliment - but it is!

Also agree with Pasty. Not much point being in the Prem if we've no hope of competing at that level.

Let's have a season selling out 30,000 seats before we go up. This might help put us in a position to buy the sorts of players that'll keep us in the div.

*IF* we ever get into the top flight i am afraid we are going to struggle regardless. Seems as though some people on here are getting ahead of themselves and have their eyes on a champions league spot

I'm going to bounce this in 10 years when you're whinging that we haven't beaten Everton at home.

I agree with you. Perhaps bounce this if we need a win on the last day of the season to get promoted? I wonder whether TLO and pasty will be PRAYING we don't win, just in case we get battered by 4 of the wealthiest clubs in the world?
Personally I don't think it would matter a jot which season we got promoted, if at all. If we got promoted, we would struggle. The important thing is that the club isn't bankrupted in chasing the dream. Afterall, Blackpool came within a gnats cock of staying up on a shoestring budget.

I don't necessarily agree. If we can build up a decent squad over time, attain stability within that squad, all the while it's part of Gus' ongoing long-term plan, I believe we can, before too long, achieve something akin to where, say, Fulham are.

If we went up this season, we'd have to pretty much start again with vast swathes of the squad in one fell swoop.

Depends on how you define 'struggle', I suppose.

To not want us to go up because we may/will struggle is bordering on insanity. To use swansea as an example after being beaten by the 800 million pound squad that man city have at their disposal isn't the best yardstick. With potentially 30k gates we could grow faster but still relatively organically with Gus at the helm. That said I personally don't think we have a cat in hells chance! Just offering up some subjectivity.

You never know though - who says we will definitely struggle? Some sides predicted to go straight back down have done incredible things and had many happy seasons in the Prem. Stoke and Reading are the first examples that spring to mind. Anyone who says they would rather see us 'consolidating' in the Championship than potentially winning at, say, Anfield or Old Trafford in a league fixture are mentalists
