Can history repeat itself? In the old Div 3 admittedly, but a packed Goldstone saw us triumph that day over Villa. I remember this game very well. We had a chant in those days went:-

To hell with Aston Villa, to hell with Notts County
We're going to fight, fight, fight for the Albion
Til' we win Division Three

One of the first Albion matches I ever went to.

As a Birmingham City supporter at the time ... this was probably the defining moment in my conversion.

I remember thinking at the time that Brighton would survive in Division Two, and the Villa wouldn't. How wrong was that?

I remember it well. That season was the the season I became a 100% Brighton fan as opposed to dividing my loyalties between Brighton, Palace and Chelsea.

Nothing like a successful season for boosting the fanbase!

Yes you're right. We beat Aston Villa 1-0 to win the Charity Shield in 1910. They were Football League Champions and we were Southern League Champions.

Completely right of course. The reason was that it was a competition to decide the Champions of All England. Albion had won the Southern League and Villa had won the (northern) Football League.

The Football League only became a truly national competition after WW1, when they invited teams from the Southern League to join.

Yes you're right. We beat Aston Villa 1-0 to win the Charity Shield in 1910. They were Football League Champions and we were Southern League Champions.

September 5th 1910, at Stamford Bridge. 100 YEARS almost to the day, give or take a few months.

What a day that was in 1972! Can still remember it as if it were yesterday (and I sometimes wish it was!) John Templeman rampaging through midfield - a couple of one-two's, a couple of crunching 50-50's and then then slipping the ball out to Willie Irvine - then WHAM! Stil my favourite goal of all time!

that was some day and some goal by Willie Irvine and we were able to watch it again that night courtesy of Match of the Day. Didn't his goal get third in goal of the month? They called it the irish jig

The Argus reported that Albion Groundsman (and ex-player) Frankie Howard had touched up the bald patches on the Goldstone pitch with green paint on the morning of the game as he knew it was going to be on MOTD and wanted it to look good on TV. Willie Irvine's goal was in the MOTD goal of the month competition as well, (it didn't win).

Thought that was the funniest thing ever painting a football pitch. Mind you of course it looked good it was the GOLDSTONE
