Brian Clough

Currently halfway through "The Damned United", a fictional account of Clough's turbulent and brief spell as manager of Leeds United. Excellent read.

Clough is (was) a fascinating character - anyone recomment any decent biographies or other books about him??

My bird has bought me The Damned United but as yet I have not got round to reading it...I have heard some good things about it though so I am sure it will be good.

I read one of his biographies, can't remember the exact title - I think it was something as obvious as 'Cloughie'.
Again, a good read. It always surprised me how good a player he was before injury cut his career short. I'm sure a lot of the younger generation would not be aware of his goalscoring feats during his playing days. Without injury he would of probably become an England goalscorer legend.

That made sense.

204 goals in 222 games for Boro.
63 in 74 for Sunderland.

Comparable with the best.

I don't know if it's a quote in any of his books, but one of his classic lines was as a result of him buying some aboslute donkeys of centre-forwards for Derby and Nottingham Forest who ultimately came to nothing.

"I'm the worst chooser of centre-forwards since Walter Winterbottom, who only picked me twice for England."

Fantastic scoring record , but was it not then in 2nd Division

Boro was, not sure about Sunderland.

Either way you've still got to score them.

In his WORST season for Boro, he got 35 goals.

Didn't realise it was fictional .. thought it was supposed to be a true version of events.

Still love the story in which Forest (?) were several goals down at half-time and he pokes his head round the door at half-time and says "Sorry lads, picked the wrong team!" and walked off. They went on to win the game.

I've just finished Damned Utd and it was a brilliant read.

The bit about him and Taylor being talked into signing up for Albion was interesting, as their tenure coincided with the ignominious defeats to Bristol Rovers 8-2 and 4-0 to Walton & Hersham in the FA Cup.

Like the others I'm keen to delve into related books, but Clough came across as a bit of a cock and I'm more interested in the Leeds Revie years, so I'll be browsing Amazon for something suitable.

Leeds record of consistency in the 60s and 70s is remarkable, albeit they were runners-up most of the time.

Yes, Albion get more than a passing mention in the book. I was at both the Bristol Rovers and the Walton & Hersham games. It has been said that Clough laid the foundations for the success enjoyed by Peter Taylor and Alan Mullery. What would have happened had Cloughie stayed at the Goldstone? Would he have done for us what he did for Forest? Would we be, as Forest fans are now, moaning as our club, twice European champions, languishes in the third tier of English football?

The book says that when he took over we had 11 points from 14 matches, and he helped us to 32 points from the remaining 32 matches, so a slight improvement on his predecessor.

I liked the bit about Clough assembling the Albion squad on Day 1 and challenging any of them to thump him on the chin to prove they had a bit of fight. No one did, of course!
