it would seem inevitable they would vote against an amendment that would implement a directive that UK opted out from. an awkward subject, on the surface its very harsh to not allow a child to bring their parents once they've been granted residency, on the other hand creates an incentive for people to send their children off in the hope they will.

I'm not going to comment on the amendment as I don't know enough about it but the rules of asylum are that it is claimed in the first safe country the claimant arrives in. It's a bit of a push to suggest that would ever be the UK .... unless of course the French are suddenly in need of asylum ?

As far as I’m aware it’s not illegal to claim asylum in the U.K, whatever your country of origin or route to get here. Of course, you’re not guaranteed to be granted asylum but I don’t think it’s illegal to apply.

International law states you should claim asylum in the first 'safe' country you can get to. Let's take valid asylum seekers from say Libya or Syria using a boat to get to the UK - and I have no issue with them claiming asylum - they will have to pass Cyprus ( EU member ), Greece ( EU member ), south coast of France ( EU member ), south of Spain ( EU member ), Portugal ( EU member ), north of Spain ( EU member ) and north coast of France ( EU member ) ...... so plenty of safe countries to claim asylum. Why the UK ? Even if you take out the sea voyage there are plenty of safe countries before you get to the UK.

Surely if you are a child then a country that contains your adult relatives is safe and one that doesn’t is not - or not as. Where I’d concede is that the perils of the additional journey would negate that.

Yeah, you’re definitely right about first place of safety. And that’s hard to disagree with. What I’m saying, but probably not explaining myself very well, is that I don’t think it’s actually illegal to try and seek asylum in any country, whatever regions one has passed through. I don’t imagine it would be looked upon favourably if you had passed through several safe countries before reaching the U.K. but I should think we have a duty of care once they have landed on British soil.
