Not sure how anyone can declare a man sane thats gone and done what he did, i really cant, if he was declared insane he could have been locked up for life, the Norway justice system carries a maximum sentence of 21 years, so that monster could be walking the streets again in 21 years.

Could be. The Norwegian justice system also allows people that are deemed a danger to the public to be detained indefinitely. He'll get a 21 year sentence, but won't set foot outside prison again.

Many of the families want him to serve a prison sentence - they think that any other sentence would bee too light a punishment.

if anyone who commits a serious crime is declared insane and thereby goes unpunished then we allow anarchy

People can still be capable of rational thought even when they're killers though, so it's perfectly reasonable for me.

He seemed to be quite methodical and utilising pure logic in his acts, which doesn't suggest he's out of his mind: on the contrary in fact.

So let me get this right...there is absolutely nothing stopping him just serving his 21 years, getting out and just going and doing it again.

Brilliant. Well done Norway.

Well yes there is actually. As has already been pointed out the Norwegian justice system does provide for detainment of criminals beyond their initial sentence and it is more than likely he'd never be eligible for release.

I think you'll find that if you ask any copper whether they'd rather see a man committed to an asylum as a lunatic than face jail time for his crimes they'd tell you unequivocally NO, every time.

The man should be left to rot in jail

Could they not just sentence him to 21 years for some of the murders and then delay sentencing by 21 years for the rest of them?
