I think this cropped up about this time last year, but does anyone have any recommendations for boxed sets of TV series that can be given as gifts?

Last year I was given Boston Legal - which I had never seen before - and was hooked. Ended up watching five series in some marathon sessions - superb.

So this year I'm after other recommendations. TV series that are brilliant and worth devoting some series time to over the Xmas holiday. Thanks in advance for the sage advice of NSC.

24 and The Sopranos

If you like your Japanese Anime, Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex is superb too.

Remember a boxed set is not just for Christmas.

If you pad it out with some roast spuds and sprouts, there'll be some left for Boxing Day too.

The Wire (if you haven't seen it already). Lots of effin' and jeffin' but that's the game for you...
I saw the full set advertised for around £50 somewhere earlier in the week.

Or West Wing - fast paced, well written, and witty. Again. around £50 for the complete set.

Deffo the Wire if you've not seen it, very cheap as well. Also the obvious one's like Sopranos, Prison Break and 24 if you've not seen them.

Other than that, Dexter is well worth a watch.

Saw Mad Men when it was on TV - top shout - and a series that got better and better as it went on.

Keep hearing about The Wire and haven't seen any of them - so will give that a go. Mrs TRHK loved 24, but I lost interest (as I did with Lost coincidentally).

Band of Brothers

That's the one on my christmas list. I've only ever seen the odd episode here and there so looking forward to watching the whole thing.

My favorite TV show ever. I'm currently rewatching the 7th and final season.

It is well worth a watch, the box set was in asda for £20 the other day.

The Pacific (follow up to Band of Brothers, with entirely different cast, set in the Pacific theatre) will be airing on Sky Movies in spring, I can't wait for it to hit terrestrial TV.

Yeah I'm a bit peeved about that. Its a series not a movie so why stick it on Sky Movies (which I don't have), money grabbing bastards.
