Borussia Monchengladbach

A couple of weeks ago some friends and I attended the game between Borussia Monchengladbach and Hamburg. We go to quite a few games in Germany but were astonished to find the fans of Monchengladbach so friendly and knowlegable about the Albion.

We met in their newly built supporters clubhouse, exchanged a few stories, beers and Albion/Gladders memorbilia and it was generally happy days.

This morning in my post box I received a package from the club including badges, pennants and the club CD. The head of the supporters club is known locally as 'Tower' he is paid by the club to negotiate between them and the supporters and is also the drummer with Wir Sind B.O.russia! who provide the club anthem that the teams run out to. Tower fought (succesfully) for terracing in the new stadium, drums for away fans and lots of other important issues!

I now have visions of friendly matches between the two sides, Albion/Monchengladbach merchandise selling in both clubs shops, supporters matches between the two sides etc etc but then again I am eternal optimist (especially after some of that lovely German beer!).

I know FC St Pauli are well liked amongst some Albion fans but I can assure you of an equal welcome should you choose to visit Gladders.

If nothing else it's a nice story for a boring Thursday eh!?

If only....I'm seem to destined to follow teams who are third from bottom...come on the zebras!

Right that's all sorted then, a pre-season tournament involving Gladders, Albion and two other as yet unnamed clubs. We'll have the initial one in Monchengladbach as they have a lovely new stadium and then we can return the favour in a couple of years.

I'll get on the phone to Germany and if one of you chaps can pop a little note into Dick Knight sometime this afternoon that would be much appreciated.

I saw Schalke last year in the derby against Dortmund. We stood in the Dortmund end and they won for the first time there in umpty thrumpty years (2-1). To say it was mental would be one of the all time understatements of all time.

I also saw Mr Harvey's Duisburg whilst they were in Bundasliga 2. They are nicknamed The Zebras and pleasingly play in blue and white.

I'll go now as I'm starting to bore myself!

We always stay in Koln BAG - it's a great base to travel to all these games and it's a great city.

Saw Gladbach play back in 98. They drew 2-2 with Frankurt, Toni Polster scored a late equaliser for them I think. The old Bokelberg was a tad different from their new ground! A large concrete stadium that was open to the elements on 3 sides. That point they gained didn't do the much good, I think they went on to get beat 7-0 and 8-1 in their next two games and got relegated at the end of the season.

I'm one of the FC St Pauli/Brighton supporters. Going to make my trip next year to see them play Wuppertaler SV. Hopefully the promotion push will still be in full swing by then. 5 wins on the bounce so far, 4 in the league and a drubbing of Bochum in the Cup.

I always prefer to get my beers from those blokes who sell tinnies from shopping trollies on the way to the ground. Nicely packed in bags of ice to keep 'em cool and dirt cheap. Don't know why this service isn't introduced on Tongdean Lane.
