OK, this is probably MYOB territory more than anything else...

Anyhoo. I've been connecting my DVD player to my LCD tv via the scart lead, but thought I'd try "upgrading" the connection and incorporate the video component jacks instead, which (I've heard) is supposed to be better than scart. Anyway, if anything, the picture looks ok, but a bit more grainy to me, so I'll probably revert back to scart for now.

When I get round to it, I'm going to try the HDMI connection instead, but have been a bit discouraged by the disappointing results from component so far, and those HDMI leads don't come cheap, at least not the decent ones. I'm a MESS.

What should I do ? Help me Obi-Wun. You're my only hope.

chhhhrgh.

I wouldnt bother with HDMI unless you are using HD equipment.

You are limited by the capabilities of the DVD player no matter what sort of lead you use. Even if the TV is HD ready, youre not giving it a HD signal to display.

Stick with a scart until you have a Bluray player or Sky HD.

There is no such thing as a decent or crap HDMI lead - DO NOT LISTEN TO REDLAND HERE, FOR HE TALKS PSEUDOSCIENTIFIC SHIT. The signal is either 100% perfect, or does not exist. You can use a ten pound one.

HDMI carries the signal digitally to the TV, so it could be slightly better than analogue component. It won't suffer any interference, for a start.

Thanks chaps. Might try a cheapy HDMI lead then, being as the DVD player has various HDMI settings to play around with.

:sigh:

Easy, Component video should look much better than the composite/RGB video you get from SCART, I would imagine you don't have something set up quite right or your component cables are crap ..

Don't be tight
. You just spent £500 on your telly and probably another £200 plus on your DVD, spend £30 or so on your HDMI cord. Its going to be with you for a very long time.

As it happens I just spent £30 on a good quality scart lead, to upgrade the video connections to the telly.

You know it makes sense.

HDMI cables are much cheaper online than in the High St. You can save at least 50%

There are some good sellers on eBay, always check feedback. I bought mine there and they are excellent. As mentioned above dont be conned into paying big money for supposedly superior cables.

what you WANT to do is hook your Laptop upto your telly and have NSC in all its HUGE glory <cough>. I did it on saturday for my car racing game, normal 19" monitor on the left and 26" TV on the right:

Mmm...nah. I don't play games on my lappy (thats what the Playstations for).
And I may have a monstrous post-count, but I've not yet reached the stage where I yearn to see NSC on a 37'' HD LCD.
Not yet anyway.

LC - the legendary HINEY has kindly offered to bung me a free HDMI cable he has knocking around spare, so it would appear I am SNORTED.

When you understand how a CRC check works, come back to this topic. When the input doesn't equal the output, its supressed - you get no picture, no sound, no nothing. Its either 100% present or not at all. Similarly, you cannot get better prints with a fancy USB cable or "better" data with a fancy hard drive cable.

But no, you've been bullshitted by videowanker magazines. Muppet.

Why are you so aggressive about this subject?

Does it matter?

It matters when people are vigourously spreading disinformation that ends up costing people money - often lots of money if they're buying £150 Monster cables when a £10 Sainsburys one will give an exactly equal signal.

The over aggressiveness makes up for what basically is a lack of knowledge about how cables carry electrical current .. if you shout loud enough no one else can be heard :)

Erm, the only basic lack of knowledge here is you. Do you want a detailed explanation, again?

HDMI cables use error correction and a CRC parity check to ensure the digital bitstream coming out at one transponder is the same as that going in at the other transponder. If the parity checks do not match, no signal is received.

You get no picture/audio, or perfect picture/audio. Its the same with *all* two way digital transfer protocols.

As I said, does using cheaper hard drive cables give you worse video quality when playing back video? Of course it f***ing doesn't.

HDMI sparkles = made up, do not exist. Psychological effects caused by the same people who claim they can hear differences in £200 cables versus £25 ones, and always fail to do so in double blind tests

insertion loss = affects the electrical signal. Does not matter due to error correction, because, as I've said thousands of times, you get 100% signal or *no signal*. Thats it. Two modes, on or off. How you cannot understand this is beyond me.

bandwidth = you spelled it wrong, and its irrelevant in this context. HDMI cables have a rated bandwidth and if they fall below it, you lose signal entirely. And in that case, the cable is faulty.
