The Field of Uck
The First Casualty by Ben Elton is an excellent read, gripping from the first page.

It is a combination of a detective story set in the first world war, exploring many of the major issues of war, morality, conscience and human dignity, as well as highlighting the terrible and wasteful tragedy that the first world war was. Of what importance is the murder of one man when governments are killing millions in the war?

I also find books by Jeremy Clarkson good for reading on holiday - the kind of thing you can put down and pick up at any time.

Absolutely recommend for holiday reading Bernard Cornwell

You ahve the delight of the Sharpe boos whicha re fantastically well written.

But also I would say even better are the recent Norsemen trilogy that he has released, with Lords of North being a great book.

Not the most sophisticated of books but if you want something totally readable, a rollercoaster of love, action and betrayal these books will be perfect.

Try Peter James, the Roy Grace books. Crime stories all set in and around Brighton. Really good reads.

The Stand is probably my favourite SK book as well, closely followed by From a Buick 8. Eyes of a Dragon is a very different kinda book from his usual and is a great read. Much more relaxed than the likes of Desperation and Misery.
