Booking a SAFARI abroad

RIGHT, you lot. Me and the MISSUS are having our HONEYMOON in KENYA, Mombassa to be precise. I've found a hotel easy enough, but the travel agents are all charging about another 700 NICKER for a 3-night safari. Being a TIGHTARSE I was wondering if we can do it much cheaper by arranging it once over there?

Any ADVICE would be much appreciated.

If all else fails we'll go to WINDSOR. :jester:

That sounds expensive. Easy to book when you're there (assuming you're going for two weeks, and have time).

Check the comments on Trip Advisor for advice.

If you only go on one safari, fly to the Masai Mara.

Tsavo East and West is a fun ride from Mombassa, and is v pretty in places, but doesn't have much wildlife.

Haller Park is a lovely little zoo in Mombassa.

If you go all-inclusive, expect to be among loads of fat Brits.

I can't help you but could I just commend you on your Ernest-inspired use of capital letters:clap:

Safaris have become BLOODY expensive in the post 15 years or so. But you pay for what you get, 3 days on a private reserve or at a private camp in the Masai and you should be pretty much guaranteed the big 5. It depends whether you think it is worth £250 per night to see stunning scenery, probably spend all day in an open top jeep watching stunning animals and then relax under a Marula or baobab tree sipping cocktails and getting pissed to sound of the bush.

Personally I think it would be money well spent.

Most of the Safari firms (as with most businesses in Kenya) are run by Indians, with Kenyans as the guide.
£300 is not too bad for a 3/2, especially if thats in a lodge (probably one of the state run ones).
Camping out there is great by the way.

Fig Tree lodge in the Masi Mara is fantastic.
You can certainly shop around better from over here, just be a little careful of sending money out there.

I booked a Safari whilst in Mombassa some 20 years ago. I got a good deal from a safari company in town (although i didn't go for the cheapest, i knew weher i wanted to go and where i wanted to stay), but the Safari company sent 2 guards with me when i went to get the money from the bank, so i wouldn't get mugged. It was a little scary, but don't know whether this has changed.

I would read up and decide what safari park, lodges etc before you go as i think a cheap safari could be a disappointment.

Make sure your safari includes a walking one in the bush or along a dried out riverbed with a guide. Guaranteed adrenalin rush being out and about with animals like Lions and rhinos, elephants that might potentially attack you and your senses come alive to every noise. I thought it would be dull, it was the best part of the whole safari experience for me.

I concur with this, we went a couple of years ago and stayed in Samburu, Naivasha and the Mara. It's absolutely worth paying as much as you can as you definitely get what you pay for. £700 for 2 for a 3 night safari is peanuts, unfortunately.

I am flying out there on my honeymoon a week Saturday (14th) for two weeks. We package booked everything (because I couldn't be bothered with the potential hassle of booking stuff off our own backs). We are doing a 2 night/3 day safari in Tsavo (where I have just found out there is no wildlife ) and will then be all-inclusiving it amongst a load of fat Brits.

All together it is costing £4k :sheep:

The good thing about Tsavo (E or W) is that it's not very popular, the same as Amboseli, so its not heaving with tour buses. Ok, its not heaving with animals like in the Masi Mara, but any decent guide worth their salt will know where the animals are. In the Mara, you can have 20-30 vans/land Rovers around a pride of Lions. Then somone'll come on the radio having seen a Leopard and it'll be like Wacky Races to get to it ... crazy.
