Just got round to catching up on recorded programmes over Christmas and last night watched An Audience With Bob Monkhouse from I believe 1994. In my mind he must be one of the greatest comedians this country has ever produced. Most probably wouldn't go down too well with the current easily offended generation, but to me a very funny and talented man. Comedians no longer tell jokes, unless it's about the Royal Family or Christianity, for fear of being labelled racist or homophobic. It's such a shame that all we are left with is unfunny PC rantings where every other word is now the acceptable f*** or c*** where the audience roll up laughing because the person next to them is.

You do realise that is the family friendly dumbed down ITV version of Bob Monkhouse don't you ?

Monkhouse was wildly promiscuous throughout his first marriage and his autobiography is full of fantastical sexual adventures - orgies with 'showgirls' and two-way mirrors and handcuffs, often with a slightly masochistic slant. In his younger years, he was famous for his collection of pornography and his appetite for blue humour - one of his old colleagues told me he was known for having 'the dirtiest mouth in showbiz, and that's saying something'.

In his book, he claims to have slept with literally hundreds of girls, including one transsexual, and to have had an affair with Diana Dors, but he implies that this was only because his first wife was unfaithful - really he wanted to be monogamous.

Sorry to let you down.

I agree one of the most talented comedians of the last 50 years and showed you don’t have to use swear words to be funny . He had an amazing quick brain and class .

Man thinks things were better when he was younger.

In other news tonight, bear spotted walking into woods with bog roll tucked under his arm.

I don't think this is a golden era for comedians, which maybe explains why Bob Monkhouse circa 94 looks good by comparison. My question is who are the ranting unfunny PC comedians? I can't think of anyone who currently fits this bill. Maybe they are just so unfunny I have blanked them all out. Any suggestions?

I do like Kevin Bridges and Henning Wehn, plan to see them both in Brighton later this year COVID permitting!

I suppose if your source of comedy is “an audience with” from almost thirty years ago you’re probably not going to be going to see much live stuff. Where you will find some brilliant comedians, they just don’t do much telly.
