Blunkett 'did speed nanny's visa'

Reports of Mr Blunkett's relationship first appeared in August
An official inquiry has found a "chain of events" linking David Blunkett to the speeding up of a visa application by his ex-lover Kimberly Quinn's nanny.
Former treasury adviser Sir Alan Budd said the application for leave to remain in the UK was processed in 52 days - 120 days faster than average.

In a separate report, Mr Blunkett was criticised by MPs for giving Mrs Quinn a rail pass meant for MPs' spouses.

Mr Blunkett quit as home secretary last week after being told Budd's findings.

Being honest, is it really that important. Everyone uses their contacts to get things done. I'm not a fan of this Labour government, but I don't find what Blunketts done morally wrong.

I understand that there needs to be a demarkation between public/private life, but to make a call/send a fax to get something like this sorted isn't corruption.

What I did object to was the accusations that civil servants had attended meetings with his mistress on non-governmental business. This, IMHO, was more of a resigning issue, than getting a favour done.

I could;'nt honestly give a flying f*** wheteher he sped up this application or not, as Larus says we all use contacts to get things quicker or cheaper or "on the sly". OK Blunkett is/was supposed to be an upstanding citizen and all that bollocks but still, its a bloody visa not red button for a nuclear bomb. Plus all that shit about his affairs, the bloody tabloids need to be kicked about as these same old affair storys became tedious back in the 1980s as far as I can remember!

Either way the guys quit/got shoved and he's now gone back to the quiet areas, let him live his life, f*** knows it aint hard enough being blind aswell!

No its important that he's gone - because there is a conflict of interest. His department is responsible for visa applications and therefore he can't be seen the bend the rules for his lover.

Remember this government made a huge issue of the previous administration "having its hand in the till" when trying to get elected that. Blunkett himself has made a huge issue of immigration and therefore has to be seen to be incorruptable on the issue.

Just as Mandelson HAD to go after taking a huge loan from another MP that HIS department was investigating for undeclared payments.

Geoffrey Robinson had to go - because he was working on tax evasion leglislation for the treasury, after "evading" tax himself with a huge offshore trust.

Interestingly the biggest whopper of all - Gordon Brown saying on Frost that he knew nothing about Bernie Ecclestones donation to the Labour party (when he obviously did) - went relatively unnoticed.

I agree Larus, I'm not a fan of this government, nor do I think DB was much good as Home Secretary, but this didn't seem a resigning matter to me.

Be interesting to see how his custody battle goes now. Will someone "pull strings" on his behalf, or will he be marginalised like most estranged fathers are forced to be, and have to resort to chucking purple powder around the commons.

Whether David Blunkett ends up joining "Fathers For Justice" is far more interesting.

Can you blame him. He was getting a regular shag and wanted to keep his bit of stuff sweet by sorting out the Nannies visa and paying for some train tickets. I'm sure far far worse goes on in Westminster.

Do a lot of blind people have beards ? I expect its fairly common, as it must be extremely difficult to shave without being able to see.

I might try shaving with my eyes closed in the morning, just to try it out.

This New Labour Government must of overtaken the Tories by now on the sleaze stakes

It actually overtook them very quickly. The worst one (far worse than Hamilton/Fayed Saga) was the Bernie Ecclestone affair.

Receiving a million pounds to party funds, then giving the Grand Prix an excemption from the ban of cigarette advertising.

Bad enough, but then Brown completely lied about it - weren't economical with the truth - just lied.

Brown should have gone.

And are a lot of blind people gay? Whenever I see them they are always holding someone of the same sex's hand. And they often have a dog.....

Fast-tracking a visa is a resigning issue but lying to parliament, and the electorate about WMD resulting in thousands of deaths is not. Strange times.

perhaps teflon and his cronies have been spending time on un important issues such a hunting ect

I wouldn't call the hunting bill an unimportant issue. I would say it's a positive measure of our society that we are able to consign barbaric and anachronistic rituals such as hunting to the history books. Good riddence.
