BBC Sport - Football - Sepp Blatter proposes Fifa anti-corruption committee

Fifa president Sepp Blatter says he wants to set up an anti-corruption committee to police world football's governing body. The move comes after allegations of corruption dogged Fifa throughout the bidding process and voting for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Blatter said: "This committee will strengthen our credibility and give us a new image in terms of transparency. I will take care of it personally, to ensure there is no corruption at Fifa."

Blatter told Swiss newspaper SonntagsZeitung the committee would consist of seven to nine members "not only from sport but from politics, finance, business and culture". And the Swiss confirmed he would not sit on the committee himself as he wanted to guarantee its independence.

In 2010, Fifa's executive committee members Amos Adamu and Reynald Temarii were suspended over allegations they offered to sell their votes during bidding for the World Cup, something the pair vehemently denied. They both subsequently missed December's ballot in which Russia was chosen to host the 2018 tournament and Qatar the 2022 event, following a secret vote by the remaining 22 committee members.

During the bidding process for the World Cups, Fifa was also forced to investigate rumours of collusion between member associations and their bid committees in relation to the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding process. At that time, Fifa secretary general Jerome Valcke warned all countries that mutual voting deals were against Fifa rules. The 2018 Spain-Portugal and 2022 Qatar bids were cleared of collusion in the investigation.

A BBC Panorama programme broadcast three days before the World Cup vote alleged three Fifa officials took bribes in the 1990s. One of the accused, vice-president Issa Hayatou, strongly denied the Panorama claims.

Fifa said at the time the case was "definitely closed" as allegations had already been investigated in Switzerland, with no Fifa officials being convicted.

Hooray! Football won't eat itself now.

Amazing that they decide to do this AFTER the voting for the WC is finished (When it was initially proposed after the two FIFA committee members were implicated). This has just rubber stamped FIFA's membership into the annals of vociferous skulduggery.

I'm sorry Sepp but you taking care of it personally is exactly why England lost the 2018 bid! Since he is the most corrupt one of them all this is yet another pointless FIFA smokescreen to aid and abet the fraud and corruption of the select group of FIFA executive members. Can't wait to see which similarly corrupt and dodgy people get appointed to this committee.

So he is setting up the football version of the Police Complaints Commission.....OMG..Does he not get it, the worlds football governing bodies dont trust them and he honestly believes that by self governing themselves, everything will be alright. This situation is so transparent we can see their skeletons and its not going to get any better with Platinni in the wings. My god, the bids were all based on an even playing field or so we thought and I would have thought there was a standard bid document and part of that would include that the world cup would take place during June/July.

Now Qatar have it, lets move it by half a year. I always thought that these bids were made based on the legacy these tournaments leave behind. (Clear statement by FIFA and IOC as part of both's bidding process). Yet without warning they are allowing Qatar to flatpack their stadiums to other countries in the world. Where is the legacy for "their" children. They stink, always have and always will until an INDEPENDENT governing body is formed. My word is that a flying pig I've just seen outside my window.

To me the last world cup was one of the worst that I have experienced for entertainment and atmosphere, lets give them the middle finger and build up the European Championships into a larger spectacle, perhaps inviting Brazil and Argentina to break away and join us for this tournament. Sounds simple I know but thats my feeling !!

Rant over
