Hull complete £5m Bullard swoop

Hull City have confirmed the signing of midfielder Jimmy Bullard for a club-record fee of £5m from Fulham.

The 30-year-old has completed formalities and is expected to be paraded before the fans ahead of the FA Cup tie with Millwall.

Tigers boss Phil Brown said: "The support mechanism that the chairman has provided for me as a new manager in the Premier League is fantastic."

Meanwhile, on-loan defender Kamil Zayatte has signed a three-year deal.

Hull agreed a fee of about £2.5m with Swiss club Young Boys of Berne for 23-year-old Guinea defender Zayatte earlier in the season and he has now accepted personal terms on a permanent deal.

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson had been resigned to losing Bullard, but is satisfied with the £5m fee that has been agreed.

He said: "It's disappointing to lose Jimmy. We said all along that we'd like to keep all of our players but the possibility of Jimmy leaving has been there all the time.

"He's been seeking the type of contract we couldn't give him. I congratulate Hull and Jimmy on getting the contract he wanted.

"It wasn't just wage demands prompting Jimmy to go, but the length of contract too.

"He's 31 this year and we didn't feel able to provide him with the contract he wanted. The transfer fee that has been negotiated is suitable for a player of his age. I thank Jimmy for the year of work he did under me."

Bullard had been the subject of a £5m bid from Bolton last week, but the move failed to go through.

Brown said: "It's shown everyone of how serious, one, Paul Duffen (Hull City chairman), two, Phil Brown and three Hull City is to the Premier League campaign.

"The only way to sell Hull City to Jimmy Bullard is to show him the ambition of the football club, the ambition of the manager and the chairman and play the type of football he likes to play.

"He has been impressed with the way we have approached the Premier League this year and he heard what he wanted to hear."

The former Wigan midfielder was out of contract at Fulham at the end of the 2009/10 season.

The Tigers have also agreed a new contract with left-back Andy Dawson.

I'm informed by a Fulham fan that Bullard has had FIVE agents working for him over the past couple of months with the aim of engineering a move worth more than the extra 5k a week that Fulham were offering. It looks like he'll now be on about 50k a week at Hull and that in itself is fairly extraordinary, especiually given their recent form and slide down the table. This may be all their eggs in one basket if you ask me.

Bullard is 30 as well and a bit injury prone. I'm not so sure that it was a great deal really, Hodgson is a good manager, if he'd have thought he was worth it I think they would have paid the extra money.

Good points. I think though a "top half" finish club would've needed to pay a lot more for a player of his calibre at the moment..

I'd say a very good signing in theory, if he keeps fit and really, really wants to achieve.

I think for Fulham it was more about not breaking their wage structure.
I saw they were linked with someone as a replacement and I thought "that'd be a great signing", but not I've forgotten who it was!

Was it Delph? Hodgson was at Withers for the Leeds visit.

They'll still get relegated though.

That and the fact that they weren't prepared to offer him a contract for as long as Hull.

To be honest, it seems like a good deal for all concerned. £5m for a player who will sonn be in decline is good for Fulham, Bullard get's a nice pay packet to soften the blow of living in Hull instead of London, and Hull get a decent midfielder who will help them stop the slump. That said, I'd be worried if Hull were paying him £50,000 a week. I don't know exactly what wages are common for lower Premiership clubs, but if Hull get relegated this season surely they are really going to regret having to pay Bullard £2.5m for the next few seasons.
