Biggest ever crowds for Football League clubs

It's interesting to see how many clubs had record gates for FA Cup ties. I always remember the FA Cup draws and match days as exciting times with a massive build up of excitement if a big team were coming to town. In those days the big clubs played the star players and it was a special day for fans. Nowadays top managers use the cup as a way to rest the stars, which takes away a lot of the attraction for fans of smaller clubs. The Premier League, European football, sky TV etc, may be good for the big clubs involved but for football supporters as a whole it has taken a lot away from a very special Cup competition.

Assuming no other clubs have recently added seats I'd say 25th above St Andrews.

I imagine most of NSC Palace will claim to have been there for the Burnley match

I wasn't at any of them btw

Which one/s were you at??

Aldershot. Over ten years ago. Seems like yesterday.

Surprised to see Liverpool so far down the list too, especially compared with Everton's high position.

Back in the old days it was a lot more expensive to get those day trip flights from Dublin, Belfast, Stockholm, Oslo, etc. You also used to see far fewer Chinese/Korean/Japanese/Indonesians at Anfield back then.

I was there - seems like yesterday. What a night.

And the best thing was that bha heard that they hadn't won the title on a flight somewhere. Take that Mullery you boring egotistical nobody.

Blimey, I hadn't noticed that we featured in any clubs biggest ever gate. I remember the hype around the game though, we won comfortably didn't we?

I was there. Charlie Oatway scored at the end with no stand!

LAX on BCal? I do remember being shocked at the crowd size.

recall the old aldershot v brighton nearly 12,000???

I was just thinking that. I'm sure I was in a bigger crowd than that at the Rec.

It would be interesting to see the current stadiums in use record crowds. Obviously some are the same, but some might also - like Aldershot - have a bigger record than the current incumbent has achieved.

The game at the Rec when it was about a 11,500 attendance and we took roughly 7,000 was an Easter weekend game. It was against the Aldershot club that went out of business. They reformed as a phoenix club and managed to work their way up the leagues into the Football League.

There ground was never the biggest, boxed in by houses, even more so than you see now.

Stadiums like Charlton, Chelsea, Man City, Old Trafford, Sunderland ..... were vast concrete bowls, cheaply done, with one or two stands if you were lucky.
