Back 3 is fine, as long as we stop giving the ball away cheaply in midfield. Everton has 26 interceptions. That is a crazy amount. I struggling to find a worse statistic than this for any team this season

Please don't keep saying we miss murray. Love the guy to bits, but in his last few appearances he was so far off the pace he was almost a passenger. Murray at his peak would be great. As he is now he is not any kind of answer except maybe defending corners.

We do miss him though. Albeit for only two or three games per season. He was immense last season away at West Ham and I think he’d have given Pickford, Keane and Mina something to think about yesterday, in those conditions, some direct football might have unlocked their defence.

Being a bit harsh on the back 3 in my opinion

When the midfield keep gifting the ball away and we have numbers up the pitch they are being exposed far more than they need to be ..... we were far too narrow yesterday especially in the second half and the lack of movement just repeatedly meant us giving the ball away trying to force a pass.

We need to defend as a unit... not just the back 3

Agreed. Since football restarted, I reckon Webbo has been our best defender and Ben White is now getting the treatment Webbo received last season. For heaven's sake, we can all agree that yesterday was poor and I believe management and coaching staff, as well as the players, have to look to themselves , but we have had some hard matches and a degree of bad fortune.
I believe we will settle down and improve at the back, but my main concern is a lack of striker options up front.

Agree with what [MENTION=1530]mejonaNO12 aka riskit[/MENTION] said. So much overreaction after defeats to teams we weren't expecting to get anything from realistically.

The Newcastle game showed how the system does and can work. Lets get a bigger sample size against sides in and around us before throwing the 3-5-2/5-3-2 under the bus.

In all seriousness, I think that's a bit much tbh, this is quite a reasonable thread with some good points and counter arguments... I think my OP was perfectly reasonable, I rate Dan Burn and feel his 'removal' from the starting xi to be harsh in the extreme. Ben White has it all to prove at this level, after the last three results (league and cup) I'd say a rotation is indeed due. Irrespective of shape, I'd like to see Dan Burn back in the team at the expense of White when we next play... that's all really.

However he is not a left back.

When we play him there, we remove all attacking full back play from the left and it stifles us greatly.

Why do people think reverting to a system with one less centre half would help of defending of set pieces? If Burn is the answer and I 'm less than convinced, then bring him into the 3, a flat back four nullifies Lampey and March, removes a player from an already outgunned midfield on yesterdays performance. I'd struggle to think of a worse idea personally...

Veltman is too experienced a player to have on the bench, he needs to play in his favoured position and Dunk will benefit from having him alongside him
