Someone tell me how playing 4-4-2 will make us stronger at defending set pieces.

And to think that last week folk were crowing after match about the wing-back system and the performances.

I wonder who can set the record for changing their mind most in a season ?

The system is fine, excepting that on this occasion it failed. But not because of the system itself but individual error. All Ryan had to do today was Command his area.

Basically because Everton scored at every schoolboy error, silver plate served opportunity.

Fixed

:p:rolleyes:

532 442 13411+whatever is irrelevant defending set pieces with zonal marking is the issue followed by stupid stupid set pieces ourselves. The manager is the one who had the biggest failure today. Hopefully he’ll look at it and change his instructions.

I have never seen such inept defending and then attacking set plays from one side, ever.

Highlighted by Cantor and WA.

They commented that opposing coaches (starting with CP) will now set out to target us with headers at set pieces, it’s a clear weakness to all. We’re simply not marking, we’re unaware of opponents, getting wrong-sided.

Indeed opposing players have a free run at any ball, today no one attempted to block any runs.

As bad as Webster and White are playing at the moment, the lumbering Burn wouldn’t be much of an improvement

That is completely unfair. Burn doesn’t lumber just because he’s tall. And frankly, given everyone else in defence at set pieces has forgotten how to jump, having someone who might not have to in it will be an improvement. Webster and White look like an expensive experiment at the moment. For all the defenders we have at the club, we’re leaking goals at an alarming rate. Getting two back whilst still conceding three or four each week isn’t admirable.

Ive actually been impressed the least by Dunk so far this season. Playing centrally of the 3 means he is less likely to be marking an attacker and one of his strengths is timing last ditch challenges.

I'd like to see them line up Webster, White, Dunk allowing White to move forward when we are in possession this in turn moves Bissouma & Alzate 5 yards higher in a press. Dunk has also 3 years of premier league experience of covering his left back whereas Webster is normally on the right

Being a bit harsh on the back 3 in my opinion

When the midfield keep gifting the ball away and we have numbers up the pitch they are being exposed far more than they need to be ..... we were far too narrow yesterday especially in the second half and the lack of movement just repeatedly meant us giving the ball away trying to force a pass.

We need to defend as a unit... not just the back 3

Shocking how quickly people are also back on Webster’s case.

We destroyed Newcastle due to our wing backs. The one game of our 4 where we realistically were expecting points.

But yeah, let's ditch it

I have a bigger problem with zonal marking. It just doesn’t work against smarter tactics. We leave too many options for the opposition and too many dangerous players either unmarked or taken by shortarses.

Shocking how quickly people are also back on Webster’s case.

He had a poor game yesterday. He has been our best CB this season, but yesterday was a difficult one for him and White.

IMO he doesn’t attack the ball like Dunk/Duffy, so the perception will be that he rarely looks like a dominant figure.
He excels against better teams, because he is fast and mentally is at it. Everton are fast but primarily they are strong/athletic.

Yesterday, was a physical confrontation, DCL and the Everton CBs, and he just isn’t strong enough physically. The second goal although Bissouma should block Mina’s run, Webster needs to attack it.

For some reason he has also started to move towards the goal-line instead of the ball in crisis situations, the third and fourth he got sucked over, but in doing that he has to communicate and know what is over his left shoulder. (James unfortunately).

Kind of hypercritical perhaps and possibly harsh, as he also needs to be helped out by colleagues.

Ever so easy from my armchair.

Good player though.....

With Potter, it’s normally horses for courses.

I think he got this one wrong with the formation. We did not pick a team for the conditions. It’s arguably the first time we missed Duffy, Murray and Stephens. The 3 at the back has done so well, it’s understandable why Potter kept for this match

Everton exploited the lack of full backs and smashed us at set-pieces. They ruthlessly punished us on the break but really didn’t do much else during the game except during the first ten minutes when we looked very shaken.

I’d have loved to have seen the following team with man to man marking:

—————————Ryan—————————
Veltman——Webster—-Dunk————-Burn
Lamptey—-Bissouma——Alzate——-March
————————Trossard————————
————————Maupay————————-

I’d have played a big man instead of Maupay if we had one available and stuck him on Pickford, Murray would have done that role very well.

And for our next half dozen fixtures?

I don’t think we’ll need four at the back for those matches.

Knee jerk reaction

It was the midfield and wing backs choosing us yesterday's goals. Bissouma failed to track DCL, and twice James came deep from the wing to score.

Please don't keep saying we miss murray. Love the guy to bits, but in his last few appearances he was so far off the pace he was almost a passenger. Murray at his peak would be great. As he is now he is not any kind of answer except maybe defending corners.
