Well The Sun article above states clearly that he is eligible for England and that Southgate was looking at him.

The Sun is a highly respected publication in the UK with a reputation for unfailing editorial accuracy

From the Argus:

Sanchez told Radio Marca in Spain: "There were rumours about the England squad. I prefer to concentrate on Spain. I don’t want to say much about it.

“At the moment I have only got a Spanish passport although, working in England for more than five years, I can get one here as well.”

Good luck to any player, talking to a Spanish station and getting his first call up to the Spanish squad suggesting he’d rather be playing for England.

Having Mings as part of your protection would swing it for any keeper making a choice too :lolol:

The boy is no fool and yes he’s much better off getting a chance with Spain rather than trying to win over the Palace waistcoat wearer.

Errr an international call up to a tier 1 international team. In short lazy journalism, he will become ‘noticed’ by our media.

Lamptey only got the headlines because he was ex-Chelsea and there was an undertone of Chelsea had messed up letting him go on the cheap. If he’d come through our youth then it would have been a lot less.

It doesnt matter what the media says. Clubs dont go by media reports or if they are the cousin of George Weah, player recruitment is a bit more sophisticated these days.

Don't really agree with that. The media here has a habit of building people up, then tearing them back down. It's the English way.

Looking at some recruitment decisions I’m not sure that’s 100% accurate!

Anyway if nothing else a cap for Spain adds £ to his value overnight.

I seriously doubt that in the last ten years of Premier League anyone ever bought a player based on what the owner/DoF read in some newspaper about him.

Yes, but his marketing value would increase as a Spain international, allowing the Club to make more money through sponsorship deals, etc. That must have an impact on his transfer value.

Meh. Its all about the quality really. Quality and performances is what impacts transfer value, everything else is far less important.

In general I think people in here overstate the "full international" thing. It pops up everywhere. "Karbowski is a full Poland international, of course he is good enough/angry about not playing". "Gyökeres is a full Sweden international, cant be that bad"... often forgetting the circumstances or not least the fact that Brighton would crush both Poland and Sweden most days of the week. Getting a call up from a national team only means you got called up to a national team, not that you are good enough for the PL / your market value suddenly rise.

Obviously Sanchez getting called up by Spain is good for him and a feather in the hat for the club, but what would (and probably eventually will) take him to a big club for big money is that he by the looks of it is a top quality keeper in a top quality league.

Karbownik ... given that you corrected me on Welbeck the other day

Poland and Sweden have a world class striker each. They would be good games

My first "Karbowski" I think...I like it. He should consider it.

Strikers are (in case of 4-4-2) only two elevenths of a starting lineup though.

Recent experience reminds us that a top quality one can have a disproportionate impact on results.

But I do generally agree that the currency of international caps in nowhere near as valuable as it once was.

Every country gives players a try who would get nowhere near the team if it was an important game.

Karbownik, Gyokeres, Sanchez etc clearly wouldn't have got a game if it were a world cup quarter final ... however ... when a manager is selecting a side for a Nations League dead rubber or Euro qualifier against the Faroes, when you've got the manager of Juventus telling you not to pick the player you'd really want to play ... some leftfield selections are more likely and some players who really aren't international standard all of a sudden have 10 or 12 caps.

True. Technically is isnt.

Its extremely likely though.

Doing your nation down a bit there. Got to the world cup quarter final. Now added Zlatan. Shouldn't be getting crushed by a relegation threatened PL club who have only registered one decent sized win, against Portsmouth, all season

We don’t do crushing. You’ve been around long enough to know this

World Cup quarter final.. and? The Premier League is a stronger competition than the World Cup. Very few nations got 11, or even less so 23, players good enough to play in the top 3 best leagues. The main reason that Brighton would stomp Sweden is because they train together everyday and would have a team understanding that you wont find on international level.

But yeah, perhaps "crush" is a bit of an exaggeration and some Swedish players would be starters in Brighton, but I think a PL team could abuse the weakest link as most national teams outside of the ten best got weaker links than any PL team does.

Seems more likely we’d dominate both games, create a zillion chances and take 1 if we’re lucky [emoji6]
