What's the speed limit on Elm Grove? I think it's 20, would you stand outside the pub for 10 minutes and donate a quid to charity for every car/ van you see going uphill in excess of 35 mph? I doubt it

If it is that much of a problem put a speed camera on the road or have a mobile camera there periodically. I see no point in donating a quid to charity for every car speeding when I already pay a proportion of my council tax towards the Police service who should enforce this.

However, that won't stop the cyclists or the skateboarders coming down the hill at excessive speed because they are unregulated, and therein lies the original proposal.

Because that's what the law says. Parliament sets the law and if there was a parliamentary will to do, then cyclists wouldn't be exempt.

And obviously so, cycles don't have a speedometer so how can a cyclist know he/she is exceeding the limit? It's a nonsense idea

Maybe it would be a good idea to have a speedometer fitted then ? I was once nearly wiped out by a 14 stone man on a racing bike doing close to 30 through a red light at a pedestrian crossing. If I had been elderly I could have easily been killed.

The thing about all these hated cars, vans and lorries is that they are regulated, drivers need licences, vehicles need number plates, reckless and dangerous drivers are eventually found out, caught and banned. Cyclists can err without almost any fear of being caught and disciplined and boy does it show.

My biggest moan when it comes to cyclist and any way of bringing into line the law braking ones, would be a good thing, are the ones who just completely ignore the cycle lanes that have been put there for their safety and the safety of others.
The best example of this is Falmer Road, it appears the boys in lycra still ignore the expensive cycle path that has been put in between Woodingdean and the Amex. They much prefer to carry on slowing all the traffic down and forcing drivers into swerving out to avoid them. I would love to know why they do this here and many other places where cycle lanes have been put in for their own safety, but don't use them.

You simply obey the Highway Code, wait until it is safe to pass, then giving the cyclist the same room as you would a vehicle, pass when it is clear. Simple safe driving skills. Forced to swerve out, the rhetoric from some people is amazing.

That cycle path is a gravel track shared with pedestrians. It really isn't suited to a road bike going along at 20 or 30mph. It is there as a choice not a necessity - same as any other cycle lane.

It's a dangerous strip of road BECAUSE of the drivers using it - the road itself is not dangerous at all. I've probably gone up it once in 2 years and used the cycle path because it is so dangerous because of the moronic drivers.

The path you're talking about was campaigned for by walkers, dog owners, cyclists, the local community alike. It is there for all to use if they wish and it's a great shared facility. You've got the blinkers on!
