Sammy Morgan's after you

as the song went, I seem to recall.

I think Chippy is our hardest ever player. If you watched him go in for a tackle, he totally ignored the player in possession; 100% focus on getting the ball.

Alex Dawson, a real menace to goalkeepers, considered them fair game for being battered into the back of the net. In his prime charging the goalkeeper was not considered the heinous crime it is now. Built like a brick outhouse and with a face that few boxers had, tough man indeed.

Alex dawson soon became my Albion hero.

Historicall we've always been a bit 'soft' and yet here was a relic from yesteryear who was as hard as nails and totally fearless. If they can be found, there's two excellent action pics, one where he's standing, arm aloft, with Phil Parkes kneeling at his feet and the other has him torpeado like in one of his trademark diving headers.

Hope somebody can find these.

Alex Dawson, I remember a game against Walsall when late on we were drawing 1-1 and their centre half was shepherding a hopeless long ball back to his keeper, when Alex came behind him and gave him a short jab to the kidneys, he went down like a sack of s**t and Alex ran on to score the winning goal. Ref/Linesman both totally oblivious, they dont make em like that anymore

There's an excellent photo of Alex Dawson in his traditional pose (back of the net, with ball and goalie) in John Vinicombe's book, but unfortunately my scanner's buggered. Bobby Smith was hard to, and going back further, Peter Harburn could but himself about a bit too, so I've heard.
