without naming names, does anyone have a true idea,of what we pay in players wages. It is often said,we cant sign players as we cant afford what they want. So what are we paying?

An extract from one of my reports of the Public Inquiry, last February:-

Lord Bracknell said:
... The key measure was the percentage of the Club’s annual turnover that would be needed to repay the loans that would finance the project. This was based on a firm commitment by the Club to keep within the newly developed Football League guideline that no more than 60 per cent of a Club’s turnover should be spent on wages. With 15 per cent of turnover required for other running costs, it means that 25 per cent of turnover is available to service debts...
In that context, I was reliably informed that the wage bill last season was less than 60 per cent of the Club's turnover.

I reckon you could chip in a few quid, given all the money you must have saved by leaving out the spaces following the commas.

Which begs the question, what is the club's turnover?
For the sake of rough figures, suppose the turnover is £2.0m

60% of £2m = £1.2m
£1.2m divided by what 40? staff = £30,000pa
£30,000pa = £600 per week.

Suppose that the average is distorted by the fact that the admin staff earn less than the players and management, we can surmise that the average salaries for the playing staff may rise to around £1,000 per week.

Some (the first-year senior pros) will be on £500, others maybe £2,500 per week. I can't believe many are on as much as £4,000 a week. The figures just wouldn't add up.

According to one paper Sheff Utd pay all their first team £2k per week but have a very good bonus scheme.

I know it is going back 10 years but I know a goalkeper who Brighton tried to sign as cover for the first choice and offered him £120 per week to travel with the team and sit on the bench in case he was needed.

He turned it down and worked for the GPO and played for St Albans.

He is still playing in I think its the Conference South.

I heard from someone that is close to the club that the clubs top earner is on 4k a week. That player is currently out on loan.

Both our top earners are currently out on loan i believe !!!

As for turnover...surely it must be more than 2m

The gate reciepts at Withdean must be 3.5m per year

Plus shirt sales, sponsorship etc etc

More than that.

Revenue per home game = 6,000 tickets @ £20 average x 24 games = £2.9 million
Plus another £1.1 million from other sources = £4 million.

60 per cent of £4 million = £2.4 million.

My source said that the wage bill is less than 60 per cent.

£2 million ?

So if you pro rata my figures up Ed, it averages out at about £1,600 per player per week. This is working on an assumption of no bonus scheme. Assuming there is one, you can take off, say, 1/3 to account for that. Hardly a King's Ransom in footballing terms, is it?

Aside from the 60% of the turnover, I have no information about the wages budget and who gets what.
