2 goals from set pieces this season is pathetic. I don't even know why I bother getting mildly excited at a corner or free kick any more.

Why is this ? Graeme Souness made quite an interesting observation in his column yesterday, when talking about how West Ham have gone from one of the top set-piece goalscorers last season, to one of the worst:

"There are two components to scoring set-piece goals. Delivery, which I would suggest has not changed. And a willingness to take a blow for the cause — put your head where you might get an elbow across your chops — which I would suggest has."

Are we a team of powder-puffs, unwilling to stick our heads in amongst the flying boots and clattering keepers when the ball is in the danger zone ? I cannot accept it's just down to bad delivery.

Considering we are 3rd in the EPL with open-play goals (behind only Arsenal and City), if we were even HALFWAY decent at set pieces, imagine where we could be in the League right now.

There MUST be a reason. What gives ?

Assume our full time set-piece coach is under a fair degree of scrutiny/pressure…..interestingly he doesn’t seem to be so active onbthe sidelines at recent matches. Used to see him bellowing instructions.

The boys tried a couple of new variations in the last few games so I think this is an area that is currently being worked on. Hopefully something good will come out of it.

So what are our two? One must be the Ali Mac free kick against Leicester, what is the other one. Chelsea scored an own goal from a corner in the 4-1 bumming we gave them, but normally own goals don't count in these things (and it's got its own column anyway)

Under Potter we were always aiming for dunk at the back post. Under De Zerbi we seemed to be hitting the area around the corner more, inswingers generally. Frankly though the outcome appears the same regardless.

Yes let's become a Sean Dyche team and only score goals from corners and set pieces, so that we can move up the table for goals from dead ball situations, and not bother to score from open play.

Currently 5th highest scorers in the division. Surely it's goals that count not where they come from.
