Yes..even though.

As TLO says I'm of the opinion that no western comes close to the menacing opening scene of One Upon A Time in the West. Just awesome and way way superior to anything in the Magnificent 7.

The one detractor from the 'Spaghetti' western genre is the poor sound quality and over dubbing of the mexican bandido's.

I did my 20,000 word dissertation at unit on Western films and in particular comparing 3 films about Wyatt Earp and 3 films about Billy the Kid and how they compared to the real life story of each person.

Can't remember much about it now but I did get to watch films like Tombstone and Young Guns. Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid with Kris Kristofferson was a good one and Tombstone is one of my favourites.

Of other Western films, High Noon has to be up there and I quite like High Plains Drifter as well.

Once Upon A Time in the West goes on for about two weeks though. I was nearly chewing my own arm off by the end.

Ha! The Good, The Bad & The Ugly (or Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cattivo to give it its proper name) is 15 minutes longer than Once Upon A Time In The West (or Cera Una Volta il West to give it its proper title).

Yeah but G, B and U doesn't feel long becasue it's such a belter of a film. I too was bored witless by by Once Upon A Time..

Anyway, the correct answer is High Noon for several reasons.
(great story, innovative plotting and camerawork, meditation on peace and violence, political allegory about McCarthyism and a marvellous theme song which includes the lines "Oh to be torn twixt love and dooty/supposing I lose my fair-haired beauty).

Was given The Searchers on DVD for Christmas. Had forgotten how good that was although very non PC for today.

Django is superb for this, throughout - but the look of the film is breathtaking too.

That's because the latter is supposed to be TENSE, innit?

Oh, and the main theme tune on Cera Una Volta is better and all, and bearing in mind I am comparing it to Il Buono, that's saying summit.
