[Football] Best player in a single match

Well, what’s the best performance from a single player you’ve ever seen live? Someone who were levels above the other players in that particular game.

I’ll go with the Maradona of W12, Adel Taarabt against Swansea, 2 goals and 2 assists. He was on a roll and outstanding in that game.

Honestly thought he would become a superstar, but it looks like he imploded at Benfica. Sad, really.

Difficult when you ruin the thread with the obvious pick that everyone was going to make

Its a tough call but likely a Barcelona player in a 5-0 win against Real Madrid back in the Guardiola days. That Barca team and its players are going to be considered the best team ever for a long long time and the greatest performance I've seen almost has to come from there somewhere. Somewhat boring answer but likely the truth.

Han Solo: Haha, sorry! Well, it doesn’t have to be in a World cup or so, 2nd or 3rd division in any country is actually okay!

It's a team game, Hoggers and goal hangers are not the Brighton way.

which is why everyone must have at least 3 touches each before we hope the ball rolls in the new on its own most of the time.

Johan Cruyff - Feb 9 1977 in an England 0-2 Netherlands 'friendly' at Wembley. He was on another planet.

As good as any footballer. Unparalleled influence too, with Rinus Michels they changed the game, their ideas still pervade today.

Our school took several coaches to that game, I literally dreamt about that evening years later. 90k sell out under lights was amazing for a young kid.

Went to WHL to watch Spurs v Man U in the 98/99 season, Ginola was something special to watch in that game.

Ha. I really liked him and went to a game to see him specifically….and he got sent off.

0-0 home v Portsmouth, Vicente came on for 30mins and it was perhaps the best 30mins from a single player I can remember seeing. He shone like a supernova lighting up an otherwise drab affair. He remains one of the most naturally gifted players I think I’ve seen.
The final result was 2-0. This is the wife’s one and only Brighton game. She turned to me after his second and said, “why don’t you sign more players like him?”

"Best player at the Amex" thread had Hazard winning by a long way, for Chelsea cerca 2018.
1000000%

Hazard and Willian ripped through us like they were playing against an U6 team.

Even made Batshuayi look half-decent, playing alongside them.

First game I remember seeing a "Can I have your shirt" banner (for Hazard, in the East Lower), and I don't get why those things aren't ripped up at the turnstiles. Maybe we can set fire to them with the sodding flamethrowers and fireworks.

Two enduring schoolboy memories:

1. Sobers Sussex vs. West Indies at Hove 1963. Tore us apart with both batting and bowling.

The OP doesn't say it has to be football.

2. Halifax goalkeeper Peter Downsborough same year at the Goldstone. A lot of 'keepers have played well against us, none that I've seen up to this one. We did everything right. So did he in an unbelievable performance. 0-1.

I was at that game too
I think the only team I have seen that came close to that Dutch side was the French world cup winning team of 1998
When they beat England 2-0 at Wembley
An obvious stand out would have been Zidane
But I remember Emmanuel Petit absolutely running the show
