Microsoft Essentials is pretty decent now if you have the Windows 7/8. No real need for anything else.

Maybe a malware programme if you visit some of 'those' websites.

Microsoft Essentials, plus Malwarebytes for an occasional scan.

I used to use AVG and it was good, but it was so resource intensive I had to uninstall it.

what is the best basic antivirus to use?

I've used AVAST for years, never had a problem with it, we use avg at work and it's utter shite, grinds the computer to a standstill when it does anything

Microsoft Essentials is all you need. If you're super paranoid then maybe an aftermarket product for malware is an idea but not really necessary any more..

avast! is fantastic, used to use AVG until a couple of years ago when an update nearly killed my laptop. Switched then, and would never go back now.
