If by 'clever' you mean well constructed, meaningful, and sounding right, then for me lyrics are better for being, as you put it 'clever'.

I think it meant something. And I think it was clever. But it is all a bit subjective.

if you want to listen to clever lyrics go and listen to poetry. music is meant to have a tune.
