Been having some long breaks at work because of the heat and decided between us to pick our top 11.
We can only pick players we actually saw play (not live)

Took us 3 days…… but nowhere near the disagreements I thought there would be.

Gooch
Cook
Peterson
Root
Stewart
Botham
Stokes
Broad
Underwood
Swann
Anderson

Not sure about capt….. probably Cook.

What do you reckon ?

Are we talking red ball or white ball? The modern one day game, especially T20 and the like, is very different to test cricket.

I think its a reasonable starting point.

I'd definitely have Jack Russell over Stewart - given you've Underwood AND Swann in there, you'd want your best possible keeper.

The only justification to play Stewart would be if you had him opening the batting, perhaps to accommodate Gower - which would help with your glaring lack of lefties in the top order.

It hurt leaving Gower out Hansy and your point was more than touched upon and I couldn’t get Trott in there…. How could I though.

Based on players I've seen, this would give most teams a game

Gooch
Dexter
Barrington
Root
Cowdrey
Greig
Botham
Knott
Trueman
Anderson
Underwood

Gower and Snow unlucky to miss out, Pietersen and Boycott left out for being unbearable

Alec Stewart is wasted batting at 5 in my opinion, l would play him as an opener, certainly no lower than 3.

Similarly, Derek Underwood batting at 9, really? although Deadly was a great left arm bowler, he could barely hold a cricket bat! That said your side is packed with great batsmen so maybe he could be accomodated away from the tail.

It depends on the venue, conditions and opposition... but I'm going for:

Gooch
Cook
Root
Gower
Botham
Grieg
Stokes
Flintoff
Knott
Broad
Anderson

A spinner (Underwood or Swann) for Flintoff in the right conditions.

He wasn't a batter but that's unfair - he did score a first class century.

Best night watchman we ever had. MaYbe Swann was better in my team but I dont think Anderson is

Rubbish, all these youngsters...

What about Hobbs, Hammond, Larwood and Tate?

Mind you young Mr Gower has to be selected for his FLAIR and also to make sure some Ladies watch the game...

Thought we had done all this in the famous Lockdown Ashes Series? :lolol:

EDIT: Didn't read first post correctly... Oops I will have to reconsider my side...

I'm not old enough to have seen any of those play.

Assuming that someone would have to be 7 years old to have an idea of what's going on, someone would have to be 95 years old to have seen Hobbs. I don't think many on NSC would qualify :lolol:

Having said that, I remember an interview with Arnold Ridley (Godfrey in Dad's Army) who spoke about seeing WG Grace play - a reminder of how long some cricketers' careers are

If that came off, then the middle order would absolutely murder the opposition, can you imagine the captain's pep talk?, OK Boys we got Beefy, just Greig, Stokes and Flintoff to go ... :lolol:
