Best chippy in Brighton?

Yesterday I found myself with a craving for a good old fashioned bag of fish and chips. Mmmm, I thought as I made my way down to the sea font, picturing the huge slab of crsipy cod on a mountain of chunky chips... The problem is, all I got was a greasy chunk of processed fish straight outta multi pack from Tesco or something, on a little polystyrene tray of possibly 30 chips. Hmmm... and all for a not cheap £4.

Now this is my fault for not knowing a good chippy in Brighton yet, and also my fault for expecting to find good fish and chips in a place that also sells kebabs and burgers. :dunce: Jack of all trades, and certainly not master of fish and chips. I was just too hungry and took the first tourist trap that came along. (They didn't even have pickled onions or gerkins for GOD'S SAKE!)

But for future reference, where can I get a decent sized bit of fish - crispy, not greasy, in a proper paper with a ton of chips? I'm in the centre of town, but am willing to travel to recreate the glory of Chip Ahoy, The Archery or The Dolphin fish bars in Eastbourne. Now they knew how to do it!

Suggestions?

The search for the perfect bag of fish 'n' chips is one of those mythical, Eldorado-style (the place, not the TV series) chases that is doomed to end in disappointment. Everyone has their favorite chippy and they wax lyrical about golden crisp cod and perfectly-fried chips, but when you get there you just get the usual stodge that you've had a hundred times before.

My personal favorite is the 'Model' by Fiveways. 95% of the time the cod and chips from there is perfect. Do NOT go to the one in the Dip which is disgusting.

Brixtaan, you should try the Windmill Fish bar, corner of Kennington Lane and Windmill Street (?) as it's close to you. I uised to live around the corner and that really is the Dog's Bollox of Fish and Chip shops.

The Chinese Chippy opposite Tesco garage on Dyke Road does a pretty good small Cod and Chips for £2.50 - top food, top value.

Used to live just round the corner from that one, its is very good, used to be better though. Chips are fantastic there.

I have just decided that i shall be dining on fish'n'chips tonight.

Like most coastal resorts, Brighton is awash with chippies, the majority of which barely merit a mention. Key here is to avoid those places on the seafront. The queues are monstrous, the prices can leave you seriously short-changed and when you finally start eating, you'd be forgiven for thinking they'd given you a kiddie's meal. Stick to places like Bardsley's instead. A family-run business since 1926, Bardsley's may be a short stroll out of town up the London Road but it's well worth the walk. Once there, look beyond the standard dishes and try some of owner Roy's specials instead. From Cornish Blue shark steaks to Scarborough fresh-dressed crab, the range of fish is bewildering and the quality peerless. You can bring your own booze too, which is a bonus.

I've never tried it, and it sound a bit upmarket, but it comes highly recommended.

I know it Deano, it's Windmill Row by the big Tesco's with the Tapas place across the road.

Haven't been there for years, but I can endorse the vote for Bardsley's.

My favourite used to be The Creel on North Road, but that's gone for about 20 years:(

Don't go on the seafront, I paid £2 for a portion of chips on Friday night.

Nope, never went there, but I left the area in '84 so it may not have existed when I lived there. Tapas in Kennington? When I was there it was the Windmill, a very greasy Kebab or an Indian restaurant full of MPs (enough to put you off your Chicken Tikka Masalla I can tell you).
