Years ago me and the missus had a couple of nights in a hotel we stumbled across this Chinese restaurant just up from seafront between the grand and the Metropole. They served you around fifteen taster dishes of the most incredible Chinese food I’ve ever tasted. Can’t remember the name and it’s probably all changed or closed now. Whenever we order a Chinese we still talk about that place incredible.

Went to a place on Preston Street for a more traditional chinese meal for a friends birthday, its got blue frontage that was very nice, had a spinning table, which entertained me to no end. Pretty reasonable for what was a hefty meal.

Lots of places that only do take out get their food made off the premises in warehouse type kitchens where the standard of food combined with the mass catering / keeping food warm etc makes the whole eating experience more akin to airline food .

It’s not the same in fish and chip shops or kebab takeaways as you can see the food being prepared in front of you .

Big article in the guardian a while back . Read it online free , obviously not paying to read the guardian..
what has this got to do with the average high street takeaway? you dont "see" the restaurant kitchen either, they can just as easily have off premises preparation. think you're confusing with dark kitchens, which are just a way for some brands or restaurants to provide extra capacity for takeaway.

I know this is not the case with Singapore kitchen, the gaff up in Mile Oak I've never used.
All cooked fresh.

I think @Live by the sea is thinking of some of the deliveroo off site places like the one on Olive Road which do heat up food, often from proper restaurants like Chilli Pickle, rather than a family Chinese that's been going decades with hundreds of repeat customers.

Nor should you necessarily sneer at heated up restaurant food. A friend of mine found himself working in Bournemouth one week and decided he fancied an Indian for dinner. It was quite early on and the only one he found open was empty. The waiter sat him down, took his order and then disappeared. A while later my friend heard an odd noise that sounded vaguely like a microwave going. He scraped back his chair to take a look and heard pots and pans being readied. Then he looked in the kitchen and saw the waiter heating the meal up in the microwave and banging together two pans, nowhere near the stove.

He nearly walked out but the guy apologised and told him the food was still great, he stayed and it was, in his words "excellent". The waiter then told him the place had a fantastic chef who didn't have timekeeping as a strong point. At the end of each night they made a few extra portions of selected favourites in case someone came in when they had just opened. He said he went back two days later, but at a much later time and the food was still decent and just the same.

It got a terrible environmental health rating and closed down (if it is the one I'm thinking of).

Dont tend to go to many sitdowns. Last one I went to was Full House on York Place, which was a bit crap.

I’ve tried Danny’s who were decent, but they’re too far away from us to make the effort. Tasty on Ditchling Road have been a good alternative for a takeaway.

There’s a new Asian fusion place near the old misty’s wine bar in church rd , Hove which has lovely food, good value too .
Has Misty's gone, by the way?

Still holds the world record for the highest number of coked up divorcees per square foot if I'm not mistaken.

Do they still only accept cash?
Nope. Can pay by card now - think that changed in the first lockdown. You can actually order online now as well. But call me old fashioned I always prefer actually talking to someone!
