Don't get me wrong, Pearl Jam are a great band, but they were never in the same league as Nirvana.

Cobain was the genius of the grunge era.

both Westlife and Spice Girls in the 90s , defining track is a matter of opinion I guess , like alot of TTs early stuff but it's roughly 50/50 good to shit with them- the proper early stuff was toilet

Spot on. And chart sales mean nothing to be honest. Not knocking Take That or Spice Girls but Robson and Jerome and before that Jive Bunny had hit after hit after monster git (in sales terms).

Anyone with a smidgeon of intelligence can see that Take That and the Spice Girls broke free a little bit from the boy/girl band shackles. Westlife/Boyzone (they're interchangeable - no one can tell them apart) are still and were always a karaoke joke. How many Bee Gee covers did they do?

I think you're being a bit harsh there. I could name 20+ top tunes by Take That, the vast majority of which will have come from the pen of Gary - one of music's all-time greats. On the other hand, I reckon there are only two or three poor efforts, so "50/50" seems unfair.

I've got a lot of time for the Spice Girls too, and I would say they were revolutionary, albeit not with the same style and skill that Gary obviously possesses. But still, they deserve their seat at the top table.

Most of the bands on this thread I haven't even heard of, so I'm not going to criticise, but seriously, if they were any good they'd have made it.

Not knocking your taste in music but - You haven't heard of MOST of the bands? Really? They have all made it and they are all good.

I think the fact that you haven't heard of MOST of them rather qualifies your statement of Gary Barlow being one of the greats, don't you?

REM

(PS - were Greenday even out of school pre-millenium? - good band though)

Yep - another good shout, although I think I read somewhere that Green Day formed in the late 80s. Automatic for the People was definitely one of the albums of the 90s. They did go very wanky towards the end of the 90s and through the noughties though IMO.

Being a huge fan of REM's early stuff (Murmur, Reckoning etc), I see them as more a contender for band of the 80's. Automatic is great though.

Yep. I'd say you've got a point there. My fave album of theirs - and possibly their big crossover album when they went mainstream is Green. So many great tracks on there. World Leader Pretend, Hairshirt, Pop Song 89, Stand etc etc. I think I've listened to that album 100s and 100s of times.

.. So yes, he's one of the greats. I honestly believe that if you listen to Take That's ten greatest hits they are better than the Beatles best ten.

Each to their own. I'd say that I know my pop too. I love a 3 min pop song done well and am certainly not a music snob. I guess it's what you grow up with and what talks to you and means something. I'm just not sure who else is a 'great' in your eyes and I'd be willing to tak a small bet that Gary B wouldn't put himself in the same category as Lennon/McCartney, Bernie Taupin, Difford, Tilbrook, Rod Temperton, Willie Nelson, Dylan et al

Course he wouldn't, he seems such a modest guy. He's probably just grateful for what he's got. But he is in the same class as those you mention. Tell me a better pop song than Rule the World and I'll suck your cock every night for a year.

Geri Haliwell - Look at me.

Happy sucking Thomas

Thanks for the offer but I'll decline. Not because I can't name a better pop song - in my opinion I could name a hundred better pop tunes - but that each and every single one I named - you'd say was worse.

Off the top of my head here are 10 and I bet you disagree with all of them:

mmm-bop Hanson
Drinking in LA - Bran Van 3000
Groove is in the Heart - Deelite
Dub be good to me - Beats International
Oblivious- Aztec Camera
I think I love you - the Partridge Family
Sleeping Satellite - Tasmin Archer
Bell-bottomed tear - Beautiful South
What do I do now - Sleeper
We're Alright - Supergrass
Only Love can break your heart - St Etienne

(and in the very unlikely event that you would agree with any of my choices, I'd still decline. Even if you offered to wear my Albion top).

In the words of Tone Loc - ain't no plans with a man.

I cannot believe that any man in their 20's can argue that Take That is the best band of the 90's and that Gary Barlow is up there with the all time greats:eek:

I don't think the 90's were a patch on the 70's and 80's but still a great decade of music

Think we share the same tastes SS

REM were probably my favourites in the 90s. Automatic for the People was by far their best album IMO.

Green Day grew on me more in this decade.
