Belittling the achievement of Bobby Moore

The one real negative for me last night was Golden Balls' substitute appearance for yet another meaningless cap on his way to surpassing the legendary Bobby Moore.

3 minutes of complete and utter folly and what really irks me is that he will go down in the record books ahead of a true great, a man who actually won the World Cup and not a Hollywood superstar who is so far past his best it is pathetic.

These f***ing cameo 'guest' appearances are a joke and it is a shame the real reason he is still playing has FA to do with football.

And is Peter Shilton more deserving of the highest caps honour than Moore or Charlton then?

IMO that's way too harsh a criticism of the impact of David Beckham. Good luck to him - he IS still good enough to be in the squad (albeit maybe not in the starting XI) and the only shame for me is that he probably wont be around long enough to surpass Shilton...

Not sure, he still takes one of the best dead balls in the world and his arraying of passing is still superior to most of the current England side (if not all). He hasn't got the legs anymore, but that was never a big part of his game. Still worth his place in the side IMO.

I don't agree. I didn't see the game last night, so can't comment. But I was at Wembley on Saturday and when he came on he lifted everyone; the crowd and the team. He also provided something which had been sadly lacking up until that point: movement off the ball. He still has the range of passing and crossing/set piece ability.

I think Capello is using him in exactly the right way; he can't start games, he doesn't have the stamina. But bringing him on for the last 15 minutes in games where we're struggling (either in terms of actual score or in terms of momentum) and still has something to add.

I'll be honest; a week ago I would probably have agreed with you. But I saw what he did when he came on on Saturday, and for that alone I think he's worth a place in the squad.

You can't compare international football in the 1960s/1970s with now.

If nothing else, there are more internationals played, including more World Cup and European Championship qualifying games, so the number of caps is not the benchmark with which to judge Bobby Moore and David Beckham.

After all, Kenny Samson got 86 caps.

People have got very short memories about Beckham. As a young player he was superb in the qualifying for France 98, even if it went a bit tits up out there, probably not helped by Hoddle's attitude towards him.

Then he went on to virtually carry a far inferior team to the one we have now for years as a player and then captain. In game after game he was the only one wanting the ball and trying to do something positive.

Even in the last three years with his career winding down he still created a lot of England's goals when he played.

Things are moving on now, but good luck to the bloke. And I agree with the post saying Capello is using him in the right way for now, and it will be easier to phase him out when the time comes. Unlike McClown's crass axing approach to try and improve his own pathetic image.

I complete disagree with this, utter nonsense. It doesn't mean determine who was better, it's the amount of caps a player has, what is he supposed to do retire from international football so as not to surpass Bobby Moore.

Beckham has every right to be in the squad, he may not have the pace but he still has something to offer, and is a true professional, he still loves playing for his country and sees it as an honour to do so.

I was there last night and I think Bekcham still has much to give the England side. If nothing else he shows a passion for wearing the badge and gives us his all. Capello is no mug and if he didn't think Beckham had anything to offer the National side then he wouldn't pick him. Just take a look at Owen.

He played about 20 minutes in the last 2 games, look dangerous in both, and nearly created goals in both?

A well deserved place as the most capped England outfield player beckons. He shouldnt start games, and I dont think he expects to anymore, but as a sqaud member I think he is still vital. Passing stuff on to the pretenders to his crown like Walcott, Young, Wright-Phillips etc

History will judge David Beckham kindly and deservedly so. Off the top of my head I can't think of five better English players in my lifetime, and certainly not one who has come close to being such a class ambassador for the game. He's an absolute credit to the nation.

And another reason to acknowledge that Beckham - and now Owen, for that matter - are greats of the modern England era. Despite their huge achievements and contribution, both love playing for their country so much they are prepared to put up with the humiliation of very publicly being dropped, and keep coming back for more.

There are plenty of far lesser players who get left out of one squad and quit international football to spare themselves further embarrassment.

So everytime a player gets near Bobby Moore we should stop playing them

Or is it just a stab at the off field success Beckham has had

My hero Bobby Moore would've congratulated David Beckham on his achievements with England and getting more caps than him....Becks has been a great ambassador for his country and always given 110%, good luck to him.

I also think that Bobby would have been delighted for him as would the other Bobby - Charlton - whose cap total Becks beat last night.

Does anybody who thinks Beckham should not be in the squad therefore think that Fabio Capello doesn't know what he's doing? Because the belief in the former suggests a belief in the latter. If Capello thinks he's good enough to be involved, that's good enough for me.
