Being blokey

Does anyone else go all 'blokey' when conversing with those who do some form of hard manual graft for a living, as opposed to airy fairy desk based activity.

I've just dropped my car off for some TLC at a garage and felt the need to bloke it right up with the mechanic. I wonder if it comes across as badly as my attempts at French in France.

You're not alone Bozza, I used to manage ats in Brighton and had a fair few office types in and could almost always tell the ones who "bloked it up"

For some reason the ones who tried the hardest didn't get the best deals

Us girlies have the same experience when we want to ask about something that blokes think we shouldn't, like cars or building supplies (and dare I say it, football or cricket).

Some men go into "bloke mode" and talk over us as if they can't understand why we're even mentioning it.

It's the opposite for me as I employ about 200 "blokes". I, sometimes, struggle to tone down my "blokey" language, when not at work.

I live on the Dalston/Highbury border. When a middle class person asks me where i'm from, i say Highbury. Anyone a bit scummy, i announce it to be Dalston, and end my statement with an "innit". I want the middle classes to be mildly jealous and consider me stylishly unkempt, and the scarred-faced dog-walkers to think i am at least partly one of them so i am not on their beat-him-to-death list.

Got a feeling I do the opposite, as I'm such an awkward bugger: drop my aitches in polite company, then polite and a bit detached with the garage.

I try, but my man bag and chiffon scarf let me down.

I'm not sure really, as I work in an office but it's probabaly one of the blokiest environments it's possible to work in.

Is this the case? Or is it the fact all your colleagues just roll with your wholly inappropriate behaviour?
