Beckham

Haven't seen this mentioned. Should Beckham be picked for next week?

Premiership players working their socks off for their clubs and country - Beckham working his socks of on the beach in Rio and not kicked a competitve ball for centuries.

If he is picked does he have a future or will be just pick up his cap - f off to the States and await his 'sir' ship............

Yes, yes he should. He's been a fine ambassador and servant to the English game, by picking him it doesn't really put anyone elses noses out, I am sure SWP and Bentley the two natural replacements for Beckham will be picked and porbably get some part of the game to play.

What a game to get your 100th cap, in front of a sell out Wembey crowd at the beginning of the Capello revolution, I for one can't wait for this game.

Class player and would do a good job in the premiership, but he's not good enough to start in a first XI for England. And if he's only good enough to be a squad player now, I'd rather his place went to a potential up and coming starlet.

I'd rather he wasn't picked because he isn't the future, and we need to build for 2010 qualification.

Edit:
He's been a fine ambassador and servant to the English game
Agree with that, too.

He's more than deserved 100 caps for his country, so Capello should pick him and sub him if he's shite. I somehow doubt that he would be though.

Yes he should play, let him have 100 caps and at least the game has a chance of being a spectacle for that reason. Beckham is still good enough to make the squad for the next qualifying campaign. To leave him stranded on 99 caps would be a slap in the face, in fact I would give him 5 minutes at the end even if he had one leg, it's only a friendly against switzerland.

Bring him on with 2 mins to go, I'm sure you can make 5 subs during a friendly, he will then have his 100 caps and we can all move on and look to the future

Interesting turn of phrase. In England's last competitive fixture, only two players emerged with ANY credit whatsoever. One was Crouch and the other BECKHAM. I don't see how these 'Premiership players' to whom you refer, have 'worked their socks off for their country' since then. Or have I missed some games?

No, of course he shouldn't be picked. Its this type of sentimental old bollocks that holds us back. An England cap should be earned, not dished out as some kind of commemorative baubel to signify a nice round number of International appearances. He shouldn't even be on 99 - its only because that goon Eriksson picked him for every single game REGARDLESS of form or fitness that he's got anywhere near. Personally I got heartily f***ed off with the usual pre-tournament proclamations from Beckham about being "fully fit" or "in the best shape of my career", only for him to stink the place out (along with the rest of the team), and then reveal (surprise !) he was carrying something.

f*** it. Capello is building a NEW England team now, and His Royal Beckness won't be a part of it playing on the other side of the planet in the Harlem Globetrotters Burger King League for Washed Up Has-Beens. Does the WHOLE THING have to be turned into yet another Beckham spectacle ?

Point of order: what makes you think MLS is a league for washed up has beens? As far as I can see, it seems increasingly to be more of a production line of half decent players now plying their trade in Europe.

At the moment he still warrants a place in the squad, but looking long term he doesn't feature. Cappello will be damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

Personally I would pick him for the dquad, put him on the bench and send him on for the last 15 minutes. That way he will receive the acclaim from the crowd he richly deserves whilst also knowing that Cappello doesn't see him in his long term plans.

The fact that no European player worth their salt, or anywhere near their prime, actually goes and plays there. Which MLS "superstars" have come and played over here ?

Brian McBride ?

Give him his 100th cap. Then let him retire from international football. He's playing in a league that is equal in standard to the Conference whose season doesn't fall in line with ours. If he seriously wanted to play international football he would be playing in the Premiership not chasing the $.

True wrt Europeans, but Juan Pablo Angel could easily play in the Premiership still (although he is Columbian I suppose) and there are at least 4 or 5 others.

You laugh about McBride but he's been Fulham's top scorer for 2 seasons now. And what about the likes of Tim Howard, Brad Friedel, Claudio Reyna & Landon Donavan who have moved to Europe.

And recently Eddie Johnson has just moved from Kansas City to Fulham for £3m. He's class.

Not saying MLS is a fantastic league, but it's probably similar to some mid-sized European leagues.
