Beasant close to Fulham deal
Beasant would combine playing and coaching
Blues swoop for Taylor
Veteran goalkeeper Dave Beasant is set to complete a move to Fulham.
Beasant is poised to be named as the club's new goalkeeping coach but will also be installed as back-up goalkeeper to first-choice Edwin van der Sar.
The 44-year-old keeper was offered a trial by Fulham after rejecting a new contract at Brighton, as exclusively revealed by this website last month.
He travelled to Austria for the Cottagers' pre-season tour and did enough to impress new Fulham manager Chris Coleman.
Exclusive: Fulham offer Beasant trial
"We're almost there with Fulham," said Beasant's lawyer Tim Bailey.
"We're finalising his contract and hope to have the move finalised on Tuesday or Wednesday.
"I'm sure there will be a coaching element in the deal.
"Dave's extremely confident he can play in the Premiership. He's very fit for a 44-year-old and has all the experience he needs.
"We've had interest from various clubs in the close-season and he's very keen to play at the highest level."
With Maik Taylor expected to complete a loan move to Birmingham and back-up Martin Herrera already loaned to Argentine side Estudiantes de La Plata, Beasant would become the oldest player ever to appear in the Premiership should he step in for Van der Saar.
Beasant, just seven months shy of his 45th birthday, would eclipse John Burridge as the Premiership's oldest player.
Keeper Burridge played for Manchester City against QPR on 14 May, 1995, at the age of 43.
If Beasant completes a move to Fulham, the Cottagers will represent his 13th club in a 24-year professional career.
The former England keeper started his career at Wimbledon and captained the Dons to their 1988 FA Cup triumph over Liverpool.
He later enjoyed spells at Newcastle, Chelsea and Southampton before a series of short-term deals in recent seasons.
