We were walking along the clifftop on Saturday and thought what a contrast in emotions is generated by Beachy Head. The scenery is spectacular and it makes for a lovely walk on a sunny day, but you can't help getting caught up in the tragedy that surrounds the place.

Every few yards there is a tribute of some sort to a person who has felt the need to end it all by jumping.

It was very strange.

Me and Mrs CB were due to go there yesterday (Sunday) with the kiddies. BVut due to the crap weatehr we bailed out. I do like it there but as you say I always get a strange feeling about the place. I am surprised that there has been no attempt to build a protection over the edge to try and stop the suicide attempts.

We were AMAZED there wasn't more fencing. Thinking about it though, the only way you could stop it, would be to either build a very high fence or have guards patrolling the length of the path - both are unworkable I think.

How about installing a gigantic mattress at the bottom, like the ones used by stuntmen ? I'd probably go along and have a go meself then. Or maybe some trampolines.

If people want to throw themselves off to their DOOM, then let them. Better that that them leaping in front of a train and delaying an entire REGION'S commute.

I just get sad when I hear about DOGS going over the edge chasing balls. :(

Although that is quite funny when you think about it. :)

If someone has hit such depths of despair that the only answer is jumping off a 500 ft cliff this is not a piss taking matter imho.

Jokes about suicide are not really very funny at all are they, yes it may inconvenience people if they jump in front of a train but the person is not exactly thinking straight, if someone gets the hump because they are delayed when someone decide to end their life, its a bad state of affairs.

Yes a lovely part of the world, but why spoil this beautiful area just for the sake of jumpers !!

It would be a blot on the landscape if they erected fencing of any sort. Erosion would also mean it would not be around for long.

Truely a beautiful place but last time we and Mrs Stinky went there we saw a mashed up car a the bottom that some poor women have driven over the edge in with her kids, that was horrible.

"Anyway about 20 people a year leave their mortal souls at BH - Apparently the third most common suicide spot in the world, after the Golden Gate Bridge and somewhere in Japan. It’s so bad that taxi drivers in the area have code words to say over their radios to call the police if they think that someone’s going to jump. "

May have seen you there! Walked from Beachy Head to Seaford Head with some pals on Saturday ... including wading across the mouth of the Cuckmere to save the walk up to Exceat Bridge and back. Outstanding weather and views. Britain at its very best. Followed the walk with an excellent lunch sitting in the sun at the Golden Galleon.
