We all know the BDO has been falling behind for years, but they definitely appear to be hitting new lows. To be honest when they stopped the practice of withdrawing the prize money from their world champs who defected and allowed players to attend PDC qualifying school I think most people thought the PDC would take them over/merge. I'm surprised it hasn't happened, and I can't believe they BDO just keep sinking further and further without recognising enough is enough. Darts is crying out for a unified organisation , everyone and his mate can see that, it just beggars belief that no one at the BDO can.

A few self-centred 'blazers' at the top protecting their own interests perhaps ?

The most self centred blazer wearer Olly Croft, went to the great oche in the sky in December.

I'm not IT savvy enough to post it on here, but there's a great BBC documentary called Blood on the Carpet, about the split in Darts in 1993.

Love him or loathe him Barry Hearn has delivered everything the Rebels asked Croft and the BDO for back in 1993.

I think that's true unfortunately. I also think the original split was about more than just money to them. I think the "blazers" at the BDO are now blindly clinging to their pride but they just need to let it go. They're only hurting their own organisation now. When the merger inevitably/eventually happens, I think history will look back on the division and say "that was stupid and it went on way too long"

Here is Hearn's view....

PDC chairman Hearn does not want the BDO to collapse into oblivion, as he sees the ‘amateur game’ as an important part of the sport, but he feels that ideas above their station have ultimately cost the BDO very dear.

‘The amateur game has made a massive mistake trying to compete with us,’ Hearn told Live Darts.

‘Number one: They don’t have me heading it up so they don’t have any chance whatsoever.

‘Number two: They don’t have the money, they have no chance whatsoever.

‘Number three: They don’t have the TV broadcasters, the sponsors or any commercial acumen whatsoever.

‘They are f****d. ‘Don’t compete in a battle you can’t win. The amateur body can’t have pretensions of grandeur when they have no grandeur, it doesn’t make sense.’

Watching Waites vs Adams, 2 former world champions, the atmosphere at the 02 is like a seance.

Why can’t the BDO admit their mistake and send out comps to selected BDO affiliated league dart players in London and the South East just to get some bums on seats and an atmosphere fitting the competition?

It is effectively semi professional darts, but even the FA Trophy final gets a half decent crowd. 🙈

Out of interest was the atmosphere just quiet or was the attendance low? One thing the BDO has always had over the PDC is that crowds are more respectful. Sometimes people see that as a quiet atmosphere, but it's more about the crowd watching the darts and respecting the players.

Bloody hell that looks awful. This will surely be the moment where things change. It can't continue like that.

I'm with Helen, that does make me feel sad. Oh the flip side there aren't hundreds of bell ends in 'fancy dress' with little or no interest in the darts....

Yeah it is sad. And yes i hate that fancy dress side of the darts. In Phil Taylor's final season, when they had the Premier League at the Brighton Centre, there was a guy dressed as Freddie Mercury near me who didn't look forward at the stage once during the entire event. The greatest player of all time making his final appearance in Brighton, and this guy didn't even watch it, he preferred to drunkenly stare at the back of the centre and chant at the people in the seats. Still annoys me.

If you wanted to go to tonight's session and have a seat at a table at the front, it's £58.80 for a single ticket.

https://www.theo2.co.uk/events/detail/bdo-darts-championships

That and all your travel costs etc on top, no wonder it's empty.

My point exactly, whoever thought this was a good move, needs their head testing.

If the venue had 750/1000 well informed darts fans, rather than drunks in fancy dress, it would be a great atmosphere, but in traditionally the month of the year where people have the least cash, the ticket prices have put paid to that.

Even Greg Stanley had more business acumen.

The time of year shouldn't be an issue, when it was held at Lakeside it was always the first full week of January and played out in front of near full audiences. Pricing is crazy though, I love the BDO but I wouldn't be paying that much for first round between players of which I've only heard of about half of them.
