BBC1 HD & ITV1 HD question??

Why on sky do they not put BBC1 HD and ITV1 HD in the normal channels ie 101 & 103 instead of the non HD versions?? Surely if someone is watching on a non HD tv they get the same picture but not in HD.

i can never remember the channels so have to do the search thing to find them. Sky now have all their flagship channels on what were the non HD ones so wondered if anyone knows why?

Probably because BBC and ITV channels are regionalised.

When the local news comes on, off goes the HD.

Sadly because there not allowed to under some broadcasting Act. Apparently BBC1, ITV, BBC2, Ch4 & 5 are required to be broadcast in the first five slots but must be the local region variation where that applies. Because BBC, ITV and others HD broadcasts are not regionalised they cannot broadcast in the 101 to 105 slots. Sky 1HD can broadcast at 106 because its not regionalised.

Daft I know but apparently it was done to protect regional news variations. If your watching BBC1 HD at 6:30pm each night you know that you don't get any regionalised news, just a caption telling you to retune to 101.

143 and 178 are now embedded in my brain.

No doubt they'll change it soon enough though. Mind you, I was mightily relieved when ITV HD rocked up, because the picture on 103 was (and still is) utter SHITHOUSE, especially for soccerball.

Thanks for your response that kind of makes sense, but could they just broadcast in HD and then slot in the reginal shite news (even if not HD) at the alloted time and then flick back to HD again. I know all I need to do is key in the channel but this to me is a needless annoyance GGRRR!!

What you need is an epg which can be reordered in the style the viewer wishes. Off course it'll never happen as sky would never allow it.

I have a programable remote control that allows you to order the channels how you like. It also operates the Sky box, DVD, amp etc. You can programme it To switch on all the necessary kit at the same time, ie at the push of 'Watch Sky TV' it turns on the telly, the Sky box and the amp, then makes sure they are all switched to the relevant input/channel etc. Likewise the DVD, Wii etc.

"Favourite" them. Then you can get them on the blue button. :)

Was anybody else wondering the other night during Euro 2012 ad break why SKY bother advertising their glorious Summer of HD Sport - on the ITV HD channel! :dunce:

Numbers game! A lot more people watch ITV than SKY!! Although how many watch the adverts?

Dunno, I'm just thinking that I'm watching the Euros on ITV1 in pretty good HD on a thirty quid Freeview box, and Sky are trying to flog me more or less the same thing that would cost me about the same amount every month forevermore

I had Sky HD for a year and when I rang up to cancel they asked me why, I said 'I honestly don't know what the HD channels are so always watch bbc1 on 101'

Not much difference anyway IMO

I'm assuming you either do not have a HD TV, or you're female.

I've discovered females are unable to recognise HD. "Its all the same".

Channels 101 - 105 on the the Sky epg are PSB (Public Service Broadcasting) channels and show the regional variants , their HD equivalents don't offer that localised choice (my SD ITV1 is Yorkshire but the HD version is Granada . Channel 4 HD and Five HD have different adverts for the South and North. Sky are not very happy with Ofcom at the moment as "Local TV" (or Channel 6) could be granted PSB status which means all epg guides on Sky , VM , Freeview , Freesat , BT Vision , Talk Talk would have to place "Local TV"/Channel 6 in the 6th epg spot , on the Sky platform their flagship channel , Sky One would lose it's coveted Channel 106 spot.

Just had Meridian News on ITV HD?

You will do living in BN15 , ITV1 HD is either Meridian , London or Granada. BBC1 HD will show a caption when the local news is on because at the moment the HD channel is a national one.

No, I have an HD TV and the difference was not worth £120 a year

Seriously ? I wouldn't be without it, for sports in particular.

Whats your take on DVD / Blu-Ray ? Its a bit more of a mixed bag for me as some of the older films converted to blu-ray arn't all that. But the picture definition on the new stuff is unbelievable. Check out Avatar blu-ray, its jawdropping.
