I watched this earlier in the week. Admittedly l didn't think that any of the candidates really stood out from the pack, but l assumed that Ben Stokes would win the award by a country mile if only because he was probably the only one that a lot of voters had even heard of.

I also have reservations about any team player winning the award.

Your thoughts?

Since when did this not take place on a Sunday night? Was always an exciting reminder that Christmas was nearly here when I was a nipper, but didn’t even realise it was on.

The Lionesses were fully deserved winners of the Team award and Sarina Wiegman worthy of the Coach award.

With women's football including the Euros being so prominent and promoted on BBC Sport, it really wasn't a major surprise to see Beth Mead win a BBC Sport award. She also had an excellent tournament, so I wouldn't begrudge her the SPOTY win at all this year.

That said, when it comes to both personality and impact made over the full year, I'd have gone for Stokes who's turned England around and championed a new way to play Test cricket.

Not remotely surprised.
Don't think enough people care about cricket for Stokes to win unless it's a home Ashes year.

This year was an exception with the World Cup Final last Sunday and the likes of Lineker and Scott away in Qatar.

It'll revert back to Sunday next year.

Personally I'd have given it to Stokes the year he hit the bloke outside the nightclub in Bristol.
Since our huge sporting heroics of 10 years ago where we were spoilt for choice, we're back to scratching around for sporting greats like, Zara Philips, Mark Cavendish and even Ryan Giggs just before it transpired what a nasty piece of shit he actually was

Since the Beeb have knocked Mock the week and TOTP Crimbo special on the head, perhaps they should give this the old heave ho as well?

I predicted Mead would win as part of a Lionesses-dominated set of winners. I've seen the usual suspects say it's 'woke' and all that shit, but it was ALWAYS going to be that way.

I don't follow Women's football religiously, but Mead didn't make it to the Olympics last year, but came back to do pretty well for her club side (shortlisted for the Balon D'or (possibly even runner up?) and got the Golden Boot for England at the Euros who won the whole thing.

Pretty good going, I'd say and well done to her. They'll never be complete agreement, but she was AS deserving as Stokes this year. Plus he won it in 2019 and, if the BAZBALL continues, he's probably a SHOE-IN next year.

The best awards of the night were for Kevin Sinfield and Rob Burrow, though. Legends.

It’s the dullest spectacle on the sporting calendar. I agree, get rid. Also wouldn’t exactly call the Beeb impartial these days. Has had its days.

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
Does anyone still watch this stuff? It was wasn't much good, even when it was better.

Decent choice (as far as I know, I don't follow other English sports really) and I guess something of a consolation for her since she is unlikely to go to the World Cup next year.

It's a public vote so it's always open to a bandwagon getting going. Tony McCoy won one year because the racing fraternity spotted a gap in the market and decided to go for it. Not that he didn't deserve it - winning the jockey's title 20 years in a row - but he didn't particularly deserve it more in that year than in the other 19.

Bob Nudd got his second place even more so. Anglers united to vote him in. (Rumours persist that he actually won but was "disqualified" on the basis that fishing isn't that sort of sport!)

If it's an even contest between two people (which it may have been between Stokes and Mead) then you expect the one playing the more popular sport to win; and I think men's cricket is still more popular than women's football. But if a bandwagon starts rolling, and Mead's supporters turn out in numbers while Stokes' don't, then she wins.

That was one of the most bizzarre outfits I've ever seen - a fairly shapeless trouser suit with most of the back of the jacket cut out. Weird

The Women’s Euros were on terrestrial tv, so a lot more of the public will have watched as opposed to cricket on Sky.

Funnily enough, I voted for Stokes and my husband voted for Beth.

A politically correct winner when the obvious was Stokes who won a World Cup and captained the England side to some truly amazing Test wins.
However Cricket vs Women's Football there is only going to be one winner for the BBC who love a bandwagon.
... but its a public vote. More people voted for the football player than the cricket-thing player.

Congratulations to Beth,

I just looked her up as I don’t follow women’s football
