Funnily enough I watched it last night here in Florida.

The whole thing was down to human error - when they spot the iceberg the First Officer orders "Hard to starboard!" But what happens? The wheelsman turns the wheel to port and they hit the bloody thing.

I believe that that is because on a ship the wheel is turned the opposite way to which you intend to turn. Any mariners out there care to confirm?
