Bayern (You lucky *****) Munich VS 1899 Hoffenheim.

Basil Fawlty

Don't Mention The War
Bayern Munich 2- 1899 Hoffenheim 1. Unbelievable result. Hoffenheim were superb throughout. Their three upfront against Bayern, was a superb move. At times they looked so dangerous on the break. They even took the lead in the second half, which they throughly deserved by their top scorer Ibsevic, who has already scored 19 goals this season! The referee was shocking, and Van Bommel is absolutely dreadful. Luca Toni scored in the last minute to win the game for Bayern. And did I mention their team is the average age of 24, and going to be top of the Bundesliga into the Winter Break.

I feel totally gutted, but very proud for a village of 3,000.

Cracking game and a good advert for German football. Why did you think the ref was poor? I liked the way he wasnt too card happy.....there were a lot of raised hands which in England would have resulted in sendings off but I kind of like the fact he just told them to stop and get on with the game.

Also a good result for my team Hertha who will go a point shy of the leaders if they win tomorrow.

I guess the English equivalent would be Histon, village of about the same size, still climbing the football pyramid at a reasonable rate...did you see the new Hoffenheim stadium on the tv news last night, it will hold around 30k...which is ten times the population of their village!

I'm going to see 'The Hoff' in May - away at Wolfsburg. I hope they are still in contention by then. An incredible story and no mistake.

It's an amazing story....and I love their style of football.

They are just the chelsea of German football surely?

We've had this discussion before.....no they are not. I understand the owner does have a few bob but is a local guy who is putting some money into his local team. Whilst the money helps their current lofty position is based on astute management, nurtured talent and hard work. They have not simply gone out and hoovered up the best players.

This taken from a guide to Deutsche fussball:

However, unlike many rich sponsors, Hopp has been more concerned with a long term devlopment plan to move Hoffeheim up the ladder. The club has generally not made spectacular purchases of players, but rather attempted to build from the ground up, and especially strengthen the youth system. By 2006, the club was ready for some "bigger moves", but again, the money was first spent on structure rather than players: Ralf Rangnick, a head coach with Bundesliga experience, was chosen to lead the team into the 2.Liga. Overall, the goal was to move the club into the Bundesliga, and the stunning fact was that they were able to make it in only two years!

At the start of the 1st Bundesliga season, Hoffenheim took the Bundesliga by storm. The squad played aggressive attacking football and soon topped the table.

Think it also reflects on their owner - who has made his money ethically, and legitimately. Unlike, some premiership owners...

Whilst I generally love the BBC I do find some of their football research a little lacking. I recall Hansen continually blathered on about how the Croatian left back playing against England looked more like a centre half being played out of position than a left back............. it was Jo Simunic who has pretty much always plied his trade as a centre back.

This is a good point actually. His business, like his football team, grew organically.

Most Germans I know do not begrudge Hoff their success...this is probably part of their reason ...and compounded by the fact it is some else other than Bayern at the top.
