Barnsley & Huddersfield Cheating?

Anyone else see the Football League show / the last few mins footage from the Barnsley / Hudds game? The players heard that Posh were losing at Palace and effectively stopped competing. Not sure if it is cheating, as such, but definitely against the spirit of the game. With a different combination of results, no doubt these clubs would have complained bitterly if we had fielded a much weakened team and handed Wolves the 3 points and goal difference they needed to escape.

Should be a rule about the time keepers can take to clear the ball. We have had problems like this at the scrum base in rugby when players are running down time in a tight match. The ref will order the scrum half to 'Use the ball' or otherwise a free kick will be conceded. That could be adapted to football.

Trouble is, in this instance both teams were quite happy to let the clock run down so any rule involving the keeper could be circumvented by the keeper and a defender just passing between them.

I personally have no problem with them doing this, don't see that it's much different from holding the ball in the corner at the end of the game.

Just above the chin.
Must to have been boring to watch, but if they were to cap how long you can keep in the box, they're just go outside the box and hold it/ passing it around.
Currently its well within the confines of the game to do so

The ball was in play. If Huddersfield wanted to get the ball, they should have gone to tackle him.

It's no different to Barnsley just passing it around their defence

This. Nothing to be done - there must be thousands of instances of teams not trying to win, by whatver means. No different from an attacker taking it into the corner. If other teams have a problem with it, they should have secured more points in their own season - doesn't bother me at all.

Their argument against a player trying to get the ball from him would be that it would have left 1 man less to defend a break away and they needed to preserve the draw so nothing can be done about it, short of making some ill thought out rule to ban such a move.

Yes, but this isn't Rugby is it.

Quite. Remember the Albion under Martin Hinshelwood?
